ZEPHYR 550 ADVICE NEEDED

Hi all,
mate of mine has just got himself a 1990 zephyr 550 as his 1st "big" bike (just done his restricted licence after panicking cos he thought he wouldnt get a "bigger" test for ages due to test changes- then the news that its been postponed came out the day after he bought the bike, lol)
anyway, a stupid question probably, how to remove fuel tank?
fuel tap has on-reserve -prime.
when he removes the tank & pulls off the fuel line what should the tap be at? (every bike i've had has had an off postion)
bike came with a restrictor kit, but it isnt fitted, is this a difficult job to do?
it seems to be just a couple of washers (from what hes told me), where would these go exactly?
anyy advice apreciated,

on or reserve Thumbs Up

fuel wont come out unless the engine is runing.


prime is for priming it after you put it back on Laughing

Hi,
so its like my the scoots i worked on recently, fuel is vacuum fed?
so it should have at least a breather hose & vacuum hose?
& he should disconnect hoses from carb, not like in some bikes i've had where you just pull the fuel pipe off at the tap?

To remove the seat.

Leave tap in either On or Reserve (up or down)

Unlock seat & remove

Remove side panels

Undo two bolts at rear of tank

Pull off the fuel pipe (large dia) and the vacum pipe (smaller dia) from the fuel tap

Undo the fuel sender wiring connector

Slide the tank backwards to clear the headstock then lift off

Take it to the shop, IIRC you need a certificate to prove it's been restricted.

hi,
no proof needed.
if the power is disputed, then the bike is taken is & tested.
nothing to stop someone getting the bike restricted,getting the certificate, then taking the restrictors off.
if police thought it was overpowered, then i dont think the cerificate would matter, the'd still test it!
but the guy that owns it is a stickler for the law, lol & doesnt want to take any chances(we both work in an industry where any charges are frowned upon, conduct unbecoming blah blah).
so the plan is to figure out how to install the restrictors cos i dont have a clue about them & my mate isnt that experienced mechanically. (but willing to learn, as am i).
i dont think the certificate is transferable anyway & i dont think hes planning on keeping it long.

hey, the ''washers'' go in the carburetors,
dont recall where but i will be doin the same thing on the same type of bike in a little while, but your best goin down to you local dealer and asking him to ru you through it for a couple of minutes. hope you do well though, JAM
