Unwanted phone calls

Do you get phonecalls from companies and they don't stop ringing you even though you tell them to f00k off.

Basically I get phonecalls from two numbers at least once a day...

I didn't do any business with them. They were asking me questions about an accident my wife's car was involved in a few years ago.. all settled long time ago (third party at fault). They asked question whether I was driving a vehicle when accident happened which I didn't answer and told them it's not their business. But they keep ringing.

I'm seriously thinking about changing my phone number.. My number is 7 years old now, I should have changed that long time ago.

call directory enquires,
ask for the number of the telephone preference service, then call them this will stop nearly every cold call for a period of five years.

also try the mail preference service to stop junk mail.

I had tons of 0161 calls to me.... I can just ignore them!
They were insurance based companys - lasted a month with me .

Stop answering their calls and call your network to report the nuisance calls. You could also make a complaint with Oftel.

I used to get calls like these even though I've never been in an accident.

I just ignore them, they go away eventually.

it is a recognised organisation, and once signed up the callers can be subject to large fines if they continue to call you. so next time they do, warn them you're a member and warn them they'll be liable if they continue.

had this with barclays yrs ago, they were calling 2 or 3 times a day but their autodialler wasnt forwarding the call properly so i was just getting silence. traced the number back to them, and told them the above.. no more calls and a couple of days later i got a letter of apology for any inconvience caused.

It seems to be normal practice to be obstructive, rude or unco-operative to telesales cold calls nowadays - has anyone actually done the job?
It must be very disheartening.
The most annoying ones it rings and then after a few seconds sometimes with background music the line goes dead.
You can't even rant at them !
Particularly annoying when you expected someone else to call or had to stop doing something else quite important to answer it.

Yesterday someone rang about a survey of shopping habits in our local area.

Hoping to give them useful information (!) I actually agreed to do it.
She asked my postcode, which starts appropriately for same town - then said "Oh sorry, we don't need any more from your area" !

Unless I've somehow convinced my bluetooth handsfree to work AND I'm expecting a callback from someone, I always give the mobile screen a look before hitting answer. If it's a nameless, unrecognised number or "private no.", then I don't bother answering. If they've anything important to say, they can say it to my voicemail and I'll find out in a couple of minutes.

Anyone who I do end up answering off a domestic or mobile-looking number but proves to be telesales etc immediately goes in the contacts book under "phonespammer no.6" or whatever.

It's a system that's worked well so far. Hasn't stopped the buggers calling the house phone interrupting me in the middle of cooking something complex and sensitive though (wasn't there when it was purchased... hence not enough handsets (can't put one in the kitchen, upstairs, etc) and no caller ID...), but that's thankfully fairly rare nowadays as I give my mobile out in preference.

Had the same mobile no. for almost exactly 10 years (found the receipt for my first one whilst spring cleaning this year, it was dated mid-july 2000, transferred it every time), but the spam calls tend to follow a certain pattern, usually when I've been having to search for or sign up for something online where a valid number HAS to be provided.

Which, getting down to the crux of it all, explains all the privates, mobiles and very similar looking 0161s that have been bothering me the past few days - renewed my cover with 6 1/2 hours to go on monday, after a frantic few days of getting quotes. With any luck the four privates in a row that rang whilst I was on the way to work this morning will be the last.

Good news is.. Yesterday I sent an email to address needsy suggested. And there was no phone call from them today yay! It's 6pm, maybe too early to be happy.

Talk to them loads about an accident that didn't happen and then when they get really into it tell them the other party that caused it was pissed and uninsured.

You won't hear them for the sound of them slamming the phone down

I keep getting phonecalls lately from a number but I was ignoring it. Phone rang today and foolishly answered it. It was Barclays wanting to know if I wanted Health Insurance off them. It's the second time they have asked the first time I spent 30 minutes giving the bloke scenarios to see if they would still pay out.

This time though I already have Health Insurance free from my motorbike insurers. So I explained to the girl on the phone I was already covered. She said we can do it cheaper. I said I doubt it, it's free with my Motorbike Insurance. She then said well we might cover you for more. I said I was happy with what I have now thanks. Her reply was. "Fine it doesn't matter then" she hung up after that lol.

They ring and ring and ring and then get arsey lol.

Think needsy's one is probably the best bet ... along with a second mail threatening the Ofcom thing if you're still being bothered.

The TPS has been around as a much bandied-about tip for quite a while but I'm hearing enough stories recently of companies just ignoring it, or even using it as a free and easily obtained list of names & numbers TO call. You can probably get them in some kind of bother for doing that, but I dunno if it's actually legally binding. It's just a "preference", not a "do not call at all, ever".

I've been pondering testing its efficacy by putting my nan's number on there, but I have a feeling she enjoys getting the calls and f***ing with the poor unsuspecting telemarketer's head. Might be a better idea just to give it to you all to use as a "fake" contact number for companies you don't necessarily want to hear from again....?

(On that note, if anyone here uses the number 01234567890, 01987654320, 07123456890 or 07986543210, and keeps getting bothered by teledroids asking for someone with an obviously fake name, I can only apologise ... and recommend you get a less easily abused phone number )

Well, one mystery solved - the 0161's I've been having turn out to be from Adrian Flux...

...who are my insurer for this year. Whoops. Wonder what they want. Reminds me, must call them back.

(That revelation came from me sitting - contrary to plans - in a cafe between Blaby and Wigston when they decided to call again, and having nothing better to do, I answered it. Unfortunately the line was so bad, I could only make out 2 out of 3 words...)
