I am thinking about the difference between road going 2"s and motorcross/racing 2"s. The piston life on a Dt 125 is a hell of a lot longer than a Yz 125-are there actual differences in the mechanical build or are they just set up differently,carb/rev limiter etc..

Cheers.

The YZ will have bigger ports which will eat piston rings. Probably different timing as well and a much narrower power band.

Engine life of the road and motocross 4 strokes is even further apart, due to their relatively even higher states of tune.
Remember competition bikes will also tend to be made of lighter materials, despite making a lot more power.

If a road engine is 10% down on power, you probably wouldn't notice. If a race engine was 10% down on power you would be losing more as it had more in the first place, and it will be very noticeable in comparison to others. So even if they were very similar engines, the race one would still get rebuilt more frequently.

Do you think we will ever see the mass production of moto x 2 strokes on the scale it used to be? Most have moved over to 4 stroke..is fuel injection on a two stroke and a came back of the bread likely?
