I need a pair of sturdy boots for my greenlane forays. I have been using my Sidi 'road' boots so far, but they arent really suitable,i have already nearly squashed my ankle between the bike and hard places a few times.
So, what do you reccomend (cheaper the better please!)
Cheers Thumbs Up

A pukka pair of MX boots.

Not cheap, but the protection is awesome.

How cheap is cheap?

I got some Tech 4's I think. Have lasted well but are beginning to show signs of wear, I think I paid around the £140 mark. In my opinion, if you're going to spend some £££ on any piece of offroad protection, then spend it on some decent boots.

I have had a couple of spills where I've trapped my ankle between the bike and a rock/hard ground - very low speed stuff, really just an awkward drop. Very painful and barely able to walk on it and that was with proper MX boots. IMHO walking boots will not provide the level of protection you need.

I'm lucky I can get into kid/youth boots so save myself money as they are £100 new, but the guys I ride with tend to get their stuff like boots online - ebay and end of line stuff. Apparently they last for a good 12-18 months of weekly wear, so not too much overall per wear. I know it's a lot to layout at the start, but I really think it's worth it.

HTH Thumbs Up

Get proper MX boots.
Ebay = £40 max .... doesnt matter if they are 2nd hand/worn by some sweaty bloke with scabby feet ..... because within 2 miles of riding you will no doubt get them soaked in cow piss / stagnant water / your own sweaty mangy feet.

Also, MX boots aren't too bad for normal type riding - mine were the first pair of boots I bought, and have used them on my cg, cb, and now the thundercat. Was so glad to have them when I started having to kickstart the KTM! Can't remember which type they are - some kind of Alpinestars (Tech 3/4 I think).

Insanely comfortable for both riding and walking around town, which is always good!

And beautifully solid!

I have both btw ..

Just a thought .. Thumbs Up

Seriously Confused Thumbs Down - terrible advice, have you tried doing any semi-serious off-roading in these?
Dirt bike boots are made incredibly stiff and big (ooo-err misus, etc) so that they can take a hell of a lot on punishment to stop your feet and legs doing so.

I got some secondhand tech 10 motocross boots which have done me ok generally. They're even less flexible than other types, but I've managed trials, enduro and trails as well as several hours at a time walking around European cities (not ideal and you do get some funny looks with no other bike garb on you.)

But a hell of a lot worse than bike boots when you drop your bike on them than road boots. Luckily, I'm sure the OP realised this.

I've been looking online now for a while, my budget is £80 and i cant find a thing!
All discounted stock seems to be small sizes, or too big.
Oh well, the search goes on Rolling Eyes

I just had a quick look and there seem to be quite a few second hand ones Confused

Just double check the sizes as they are often US sizes rather than UK sizes..........and obviously make sure they're not the Youth size!! Embarassed

There is a pair on this page for £80.99 and with postage it's £87, they look ok and pretty cheap to.

I'd suggest army boots.

Motocross boots dont have grips on the bottom, so are a bit slippy if you need to pull the bike about.

I'm sure someone will point out the hazards of steel toe caps on a motorbike, but I think its worth the risk.

I also recommend these things which are zips with eyelets that you lace in, so you can take boots on and off quickly and have laces tucked in. Laces are a bit of a hazard on a motorbike as they can snag a footpeg, so using these zips is better all round.

I only knew they existed due to bcf's resident cheery helpful soul Bazza.

Army boots aren't going to be much good when you have a bike crashing down on your foot. You can get proper off road boots with proper grippy soles. I know these are out of the price range but as an example

I've used Army boots off-road before and they're not as bad protection wise as Joe suggests, but certainly don't offer the protection levels of boots made for dirt riding.
I've never found the fairly smooth soles of motocross boots to be a problem. However, enduro and trials boots do tend have reasonable amounts of grip and still offer about the same protection - note that trials tend to be a bit more flexible, meaning a bit less protection from some bits, but easier walking.
