Well my bike lost its spark a while back and im trying to work out the problem.

My magneto has 5 wires coming out of it two go to a plug that was never connected up (presume for something like lights or similar, but thats all been removed now and is used on the farm)

That leaves 3 wires that are used, one goes to earth and the other two go to the CDi units.

One gives a voltage of up to 90 volts depending how hard i kick it over.

The other only gives a max of 0.2volts.

So my inital question is does this seem to be correct?

Probably right, I expect the larger one is providing power to the CDI and the smaller one is the trigger pulse which causes the spark to go off at the correct point in the engine's rotation.

Hiya,

I think this is what you need...Just double check the 5 wires on the plug coming out of the magnito line up with the plug on the bike wiring harness, I seem to remember that sometimes they swap the position of the red/black wire from left to right.

Oh, almost forgot that the output is AC voltage, not DC

Thanks for the replies, hopefully the magneto is working correctly then, and it must be the CDI unit at fault.

Unfortunately the diagram you have posted in slightly different to my look my CDI unit has a single green 5 pin plug.

Does anyone know how i test the CDI unit, as i would just buy a new one to test it, but the only ones matching mine are from america, i brought a white pluged 5 pin CDI and tried that but it didnt appear to do anything atall when i pluged it in, where as my current CDI unit gives atleast out 12v from one of the wires, possibly more, but i cant really remember...

oil burners aside, completely disconnect the kill switch wire, then trace the wire to the coil. Disconnect this from the coil and hold it close to an earth, turn the engine over, you should get sparks from it.

I have removed the wires drom the coil and one wire was getting a max of about 18v depending on how hard it was kicked over and the other wire goes to the earth.

the cdi is probably working, then; but note that you are actually looking for a pulse on that wire, not a dc voltage. What you are seeing is probably the meter averaging that pulse. You'll need a 'scope to see for sure - or try to coax a spark out of it as above.

However, given that you are getting something out of the cdi, I'd take a closer look at the coil and the ht leads.

That was my thinking, but i have iv put a new coil, ht lead and plug on it, and its showing exactly the same reading as before i fitted this.

Im thinking that the problem is probably the pulse is not working, from the magneto but i dont have the equiptment to test for this.
