Overpriced. Has clearly been down the road before, '£800 paintjob' means nothing (non standard paint reduces the value). Plus that scheme is cluttered and, well, rubbish.
Years T&T is promising, but it's an old bike, mileage could be way out with no service history. Who knows what bits are wearing out.
To put it in perspective, I bought (and sold) a '94 and a '96 gullarm both with very nice standard paint for £1350 and £1500.
I wouldn't pay even a grand for a G reg NC29 in that condition.

I agree mostly, most of these bikes will probably have been owned by new riders and seen the tarmac at some point, so may need money spending on them. Saying that, my '89 Tri Arm cost £700 and has so far NEEDED about £20 in parts, these being a new tank cap and a clip on. I've decided to change the exhaust and tyres because I had the money too and they would have needed doing by xmas anyway.
As to the original question the 3 main things I can think of to look out for on the CBR400 are as follows;
- The exhaust. As standard it is made of mild steel, so will most likely be on its way out, if not already wrecked. The bike you posted appears to have the standard matt black system, the most prone place seems to be the bottom collector box, just before the 2 boxes join into the single rear section, water collects here and rots the system from the inside out.
- Headstock bearings.It has been pointed out to me if the bearings are aftermarket taper roller type, they can suffer from needing nearly constant adjustment, the standard Honda type seem to be the preffered choice.
- Regulator/rectifiers. The standard Honda unit is crap and is a common problem, they aren't finned as standard so overheat and burn out. This puts the battery at high risk of being destroyed (I assume from the unregulated voltage spikes) aswell as the generator and possibly the loom. Check to see if it has been replaced for a finned unit (R6 ones supposedly plug straight in and do the job perfectly)

Don't forget that prices will be on the high side atm, maybe wait a bit until september when prices drop again, I'm glad I did, NC23's seem to be at £800 for road ready projects, all the way up to £12-1300 for fairly clean bikes

I fancy myself a Honda. I've got a ZXR400 in the garage at the moment. Going to rebuild it for track days. Ran out of tax and MOT now so perfect timing.
I want a 400 for the summer. So yeah, gotta be a blade.  |

On the whole;
these bikes are nippy for a 400 
but there seating is very extreme, i'm 6ft 1 and i literally couldn't fit my legs on the pegs  felt like i was on a mini moto lol, all be it a fast one
its a honda so its reliable, but like said it old so no matter how reliable a bike is stuff still wears out
get the cleanest, low mileage one you can get and all should be ok |

I had an NC29 back in 1999, paid through the nose for it & found it heavy & slow. The ZXR is a far superior bike in every way & just as reliable if you keep on top of the maintenance although not quite as well put together or as pretty. I agree with the others 1500 quid sounds far too much for a 21 year old 400 with a non standard paint job. I'd say get a CBR600 FM/FP perfectly good/reliable road bike & probably cheaper to insure now.

I know the guy who owns the bike (well its his wifes bike) I haven't seen the bike personally but it is an actual respray rather than Chinese fairings. It was crashed, but nothing major, funnily enough by him (ex bike racer  ) just after buying it for his wife and taking it out for a spin, got a little carried away They have spent quite a bit of cash getting upto a good standard.
