I was on out my bike today and whilst overtaking my bike suddenly lost all it's power. I was doing around 60 mph in 5th, leisurely overtaking. Usually it's no effort, however today I had to pin the throttle and even then it wasn't speeding up. I changed down gears and that didn't help, the revs just kept dropping and the speed kept dropping despite using the throttle. So I had to pull over as I couldn't even maintain 30mph. But from then on, no problems at all and I continued my ride home without any issues.

Any ideas as to why the power dropped? My only thoughts would be if my foot was perhaps resting on the back brake, but that wouldn't explain the low revs.

I ride a Honda CB-1 and up until now this is pretty much the only problem I've encountered. I'd filled up less than 10 miles before I hit the problem so it had plenty of fuel and the engine was warmed up as I'd been using the bike all day.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions as to what might have happened.

Sounds like fuel starvation, might've just had some crap go through the fuel line causing a momentary blockage, other guess would be something like an earthing HT lead, or bad battery but as it recovered almost instantly i'd go with fuel, did you run the tank very low before filling up? Just see if it happens again, probably a one off.

The above and possibly a little water drawn through if the fuel was on reserve recently.

I did run it down to reserve a few weeks ago, but apart from that it's been filled up when it's usually at half a tank or so. Ah well, I'm hoping it's just a one off. If it does it again I'll check the fuel filter.

Cheers guys

Check the fuel line, as it is quite easy for it to kink underneath the tank. Had this problem on my CB-1 with it randomly loosing power at the most impromptu times, turns out the fuel line was randomly getting caught between the seat/tank and starving the engine of fuel.

You should be able to see the fuel line on the left hand side, above the metal side plate.
