Replace single sprocket or the whole lot?

As above really.

Got a nice rattle coming from the front sprocket area.
Mechanic who MOT'd the bike yesterday checked it out and said that I could just replace the front sprocket for now but would need to replace the lot after the summer.

Can't afford to pull out for a full new C&S set at the moment so ordered a new front sprocket for now - did I do the right thing here or should I just wait a little while and replace the set?

Hi

As a short term bodge it is OK, but the chain will probably wear the new front sprocket more rapidly. If the chain and rear sprocket are honestly not too bad then it is probably worth the cost of a replacement front.

Hi

Just keep a good eye on the chain to make sure that it doesn't get too bad.

The front sprocket suffers more wear than the rear, but is normally a far harder grade of steel to compensate. However sometimes not, and then they wear rapidly.
