High Temp Spray Paint

Hey.

I've recently brought a new bike. And I'm tidying parts up on it. One part which is eye catching is the exhaust, and all for the wrong reasons.

The guy that had it before me had spray painted in black, with high temp spray paint, it looks terrible, its not even and its all flaked.

I've sanded it all down again to remove as much of is as I can, and gave it a smooth surface.

Now I just need the correct spray paint to use, I only want some cheap-ish stuff.

Do you think 500deg will be a higher enough temp?

For the can yes it will probably be ok - i.e. it will flake eventually but shouldnt burn off. The rest of the exhaust system will get hotter than that though.

Many people use plastikote BBQ paint with good results, although TBH I can't imagine many paints being up to lasting any real time on the headers of a larger machine.

It depends on the bit of exhaust your painting. The bit near the engine can get up to 650 degrees, the silencer probably about 100. Halfords do some higher temp stuff in a tin.

Don't smooth things too much or the paint won't stick

Its still rough enough to hold the paint lol.

Its the pipes I need spraying not the actual silencer.

I might try get a higher temp paint, something like 750 should do, surely it doesn't go any higher than that.

Keep in mind that applying a second coat is much easier using a brush as it can be done without removing the exhaust again. Let it dry before starting the engine, and then start the engine and run it for a bit without going for a ride. Repeat for additional protection.

Don't want to thread hijack but I'm looking for brake caliper paint, anyone got any idea how hot they get?

Maybe 100+ if your on a track day or something. Never really got mine more than warm road riding. There is specialist caliper paint for sale in halfords though this is probably just more resistant to brake fluid leaks than high temperatures. I've used normal paint to no ill effect before.
