Quick question, I've seen many 125s and 50s being ridden with L plates different to the standard red and white. I've seen Ls cut out of the white background and different coloured Ls. Could someone clear up my confusion? cheers

Im not sure on the colour, but i have a cut out L Plate on my bike on the front mudguard. you can hardly see it, but i have never had any trouble. basically i think as long as they are visable and i think red and white, your fine!

The standard L plate that is sold in shops is what's legal. That and the D plate in wales.

The rest aren't legal. Same if you trim it down.

There are lots of decent cops out there, but in contrast a lot of dicks too.

Don't give them an excuse to take your money and get a proper L plate.

3 points and a fine for not displaying an L plate.

IIRC. Thumbs Up

I knew you have to have 2, one on the front and back, but I didn't know you could get individually charged. As in, you have a back one, but not the front, 3 points.

No back, but on the front, 3 points.

None at all, 6 points haha. Half your license. Not worth it. Thumbs Up

Nope, your probation period is a new drivers act so its from your 1st test, car or bike.

If you have 6 points then pass your test, you still keep your licence. but if you get even 1 more point you lose it. So if your friend has 6 points already, tell him not to take his test until they are gone.

If an 'L' plate is:

14.6cm x 14.6cm
Red 'L' on a white background.

It is legal.

If it does not conform to them both, it's illegal.

The ones you see cut out to fit the screen on 50/125 sports bikes aren't even 'technically' illegal, they are as illegal as riding drunk, it's an absolute offence.

Just take your test, my mates mum is on her 2nd CBT. I'm like why? Is she mad, the cost of her CBT is twice that of the test!!

IMHO the bike test is easy, even an idiot like me can pass it after only 2 lessons.

had a slight thought, as you cant trim a l plate and a moody copper may try you for it,
what about the ones that mount with screws through it into the plate that you have to make, is that a reasonable attempt to affix it, or technically its shortening the visible white background?

I doubt even the most pricky of coppers, on their worst day, will even attempt to do you for that. although... british police force.... i wouldn't put money on my previous statement.

By the way, if we're on about legal technicalities with L plates, both need to be fixed as close as possible to vertical. L's on the front mudguard is technically illegal because they "aren't sufficiently visible" from the front.

IMO, they should only be required on the back. Reg plates are rear only, why not L's as well. after all... a lack of visible L plate can't get you out of a speeding ticket Wink lack of front reg plate can!

I remember reading somewhere that the corners are allowed to be obscured so the plate can be fixed as long as the L-plate is the right size if the corners were still visible. Other option is use white screws or paint the heads.

Not per plate, as "driving other than in accordance with licence" covers both under one offence. (I used to think it was per plate, but was corrected last time this came up).

You can however round the corners off.

Yes, you could, although driving otherwise than in accordance with your licence is a discretionary 3-6 points IIRC.

(along with discretionary disqualification, and a fine upto £1000)
