Help me choose the bike, advice pls!

l am looking to pick up another bike, for a bit of off road/greenlane fun. l had a drz350 on/off road & winter bike and new l'd miss the thing when l traded it in. I do!.

I've seen a:

05 CRF450 r5 ..£1500 has had a new piston fitted
06 CRF450 r6 ..£1700 has had new throttle cable ,chain,sprockets....and has spare piston/ring + other parts to go with it. But not needing them now!?.

Any advice or opinion on which of the above if any?,why not either?
How much of a pain to make road legal?.
P.S. if l thought l could pay less for something smaller l would but l'm 6'4" and 17+stone so need to factor this in. Cheers Smile Thumbs Up

Competition dirt bikes from 125cc to 650cc are all about the same size, so it shouldn't be a factor. A 125 enduro bike should make around 35hp (bit more than your DR350 despite weighing a fair bit less) so that also shouldn't be an issue either.

Personally, I would go for an enduro bike at most for greenlaning/road riding and ideally a 2 stroke for even less maintenance.

cheers G, l was thinking more of the power v weight than the actual size. l did'nt think a 125 enduro would have more hp than my DR!!. This gives me more options for the dosh l want to spend! Thumbs Up

Mate of mine just done the same mistake your about to.
Unless the crf is the full blown enduro x model then stay away.
Its a motorcross bike so its built to be ridden hard at high reves flat out
The opersit to what you want if you intend to go trail riding.

again a few years ago a friend bought a yzf 450 the difference to my wr450 while out riding was vast.
I could be in 2nd gear plodding about in the tite stuff he,d be in 1st gear riding the clutch.

ive seen a few people now that have tried to save money and get a motocross bike for green laning.
None of them still have them.

Cheers for the above mate!, l havent bought anything as yet - more to do with not wanting to spend a lot on this 'v' whats available for not a lot of dosh!. l'm really after an on/off road bike (so there's less choice than pure off road) so l can use it in winter also - & if l was to drop it, no big deal!. l have been tempted by a couple -off roads, but l'll wait and keep looking. Smile

I would say a Honda crm 250 would be ideal step up from a 125.
Or maybe a kdx 220 can get them both for under a grand if you look about.

But he had a 350 last - though the CRM is still a bit of a 'step up', but not too much.
CRM125 would be a step down from the 125s I was talking about, I'd say.

Hey both, yes l'm looking for 250/350ish bike that's road reg'd. This would'nt be such a problem if l could spend more than am going too but my gs cost a lot & l cant justify a lot of dosh on a bike like this for fun off road & winter!. Also l'd travel a bit for it but aint driving from Glasgow to London say, for a hack! which makes it all the harder to find, something will turn up - always does!! Smile

If this in reference to my original post Question , what l meant was the fact that the sale included a bunch of spares including pistons etc had me thinking the engine/bike needs them all. If this was the case and l was selling the bike l'd fix what needed fixing THEN sell the bike in top nick for top dollar - as opposed to give the parts away with the bike.
It's got me thinking that even more parts/work are needed!!?, as you say the price is good!, l suppose l'm just a bit wary of buying a pup is what it boils down too.
As it turns out both those bikes are'nt road reg'd anyway Thumbs Up

Especially non registered motocross bikes do tend to be fairly cheap.
They are quite cheap to start with, as there's not much to them, then people tend to swap them out fairly regularly thanks to this.
However as far as the parts go, they were probably there more as 'service items' - remember this is a competition bike designed to win races, with plenty of time between race weekends to get the bike back to race-winning spec Smile.
