I was pretty shocked today, when my neighbour mentioned she regularly falls asleep on the way to work on the M8. I didn't know what to say. Watch out she's on her way to Brighton right now.

I nearly shut my eyes on the M18 yesterday and I was riding my bike!

I think the consequences of that would be pretty instant and deadly.

Shocked Shocked Surprised that people actually admit to it!!

I have know that at times I nearly dozed off on the M25 during rush hours (about 1/2 yrs ago when travelling regularly to Peterborough on business)... but was always so ashamed that I did not stop to take a break and embarrassed that at the time I would never say to anyone!!

She's pretty nice, but you got to wonder, how many other people are doing it?

I can't understand people who do this. I've driven and ridden enough miles to know that you can't 'drive through' tiredness, and - in a car - winding down the window or turning the radio up doesn't work either. You have to stop, if only for 10 minutes. Better to be somewhere late and get there, than not get there at all. It's been shown that tiredness is a bigger cause of motorway accidents than speed...

I find the people I meet who have cars, are much more willing to take risks like that. If im tired i stay away from the bike.

MY brother fell asleep on his bike, rode straight into the back of a van. Glasgow royal infirmary with head injuries.

I drove home once after a 36 hour shift at work, very scary.

Tiredness can kill, please take a break, red bull, 30 mins power nap, whatever.

Shade
Not a statistic.

I've been diagnosed with sleep apnea, which basically means I am tired all the time as I don't sleep properly. Problem should be solved with a little machine in a couple of weeks, but the last six months have been terrible, as I drive for about 45 mins, then just go tired. I now know where every service station in the country is, just about, as I drive for a living, fortunately most of my calls over this period have been local, which is OK, but I have to be so careful when I do a longer journey.

That's true - people get in a car and it becomes a cocoon - a nice safe little world.

Yup, best thing to do is take a break and drink coffee or red bull like I did yesterday.

But I gotta admit Motorways are very monotonous and boring!

Offer to travel with her to make sure she stays awake. Every time she closes her eyes, slap her in the face, hard.

She stays awake and doesn't kill anyone and you get a free lift to work Thumbs Up

As I said, watch out she was leaving for Brighton at 10:00 this morning. I was just back, I'd been out trying my hand at roundabout surfing. She'll be there for a week, so she dawn sath for a bit.

Following a tall lorry in a country lane is very boring and tireing as well. I nearly fell asleep behind one, I wouldn't touch a motorway, they must be so boring? Smile

Country lanes usually keep you on your toes if you ride a bike with power.

Motorways ain't that boring but after a long day they do.

I have never fallen asleep, but I quite often 'zone out'. You know, when you have absolutley no recollection of the previous ten miles? I can't have been asleep because I would have crashed, doesn't seem to be when I feel tired either. It is usually only on roads that I know well like on the way home from work, which is disturbing because it is a very twisty and dangerous road.

Read somewhere they'd done a study (psychologists bods) and if you can do this then you've probably driven/ridden the best in your life. You're bodies taken on auto-pilot and you're mind's taking a back seat. If I remember it's quite safe as if anything unexpected (re: dangerous) happens then your mind switches back on into survival mode and keeps you safe.

Well, I thought it was interesting Wink

Map, I do hope you are right as it does happen to me most times I go on a motorway or I do a long journey! When I arrive to my destination I have no recollection at all of the journey but I know I have been thinking about other things.

But you are right, if something "goes wrong" then I become very attentive. A few times on the motorway I had to react to other drivers and touch wood so far never had any accidents and always seemed to be alert!
