Traveling into London

Hey

I've just landed this job in West London on Tottenham Court Road and just wondering on costs etc. I'll be travelling from Dartford and can get the train or take the bike.

If I take the train, I need to go to Charing Cross then tube it to Googe Street. What tickets will I need and do you buy weekly/monthly?

Ideally I'd like to go by bike, what route would you choose? How much is bike parking usually?

What do you usually do with suits, leave it at work and change? Wear a shirt under jacket?

I know it's a lot of questions but I'd appreciate it

Fuck doing that on a bike every day.

Get the train, buy a monthly underground ticket (Zone 1) and a monthly overground until you've passed your probationary period and then buy annual. Last 2 places I've worked in IN or NEAR London can provide 0% loans to cover the annual train costs.

Not a chance in hell I'd do that on a bike every day. Infact, there's not a chance in hell I'd do that on a train either. I'd relocate. I do NW London to Slough everyday and that's the same sort of distance as your journey but at least I'm going against the movement of traffic.

Ah right good bit of info there thanks. From Dartford station to Charing Cross plus tube and walking it takes 1 hour. I'm guessing going by bike would be a nightmare then.

I thought bike would be cheaper but seems it's not the right way to go.

Anyone else travel into London?

Luv, Tottenham Court Road is NOT in West London.
It is bang smack in Central London itself.

I ride into London, but only from near Docklands airport.

I should think it would be nice riding from as far as Dartford in the summer, but wouldnt fancy it in the winter.

I ride to work most of the year round, 5 days a week, unless its snowing.

But its only 11 miles to work and 11 miles back

I went from Orpington (not a dissimilar distance to Dartford) into Notting Hill and Shepards Bush for about 5 years and then Tottenham Court Road for about 6 months.

Use the train. While it will infuriate you at times it is just easier than trying to use your own vehicle. It also means you can 'socialise' after work and still get home.

As for tickets, the longer you buy in advance, the cheaper it is. For one reason or another I never got round to buying an annual always opting for the monthly, bad idea as I could easily have saved around £500 a year.
My journey was Zone6 to 1 (I think Dartford is just outside the zones) and the ticket was around £10 a day peak, or £150 a month.
While I hated the trains because they were rarely on time, compared to public transport in Wiltshire, they are a dream!

Get off the train at Charing Cross and walk to Tottenham Court Road. It's only a ten minute walk, 15 at the most. A weekly return from Dartford to Charing Cross will cost you about £60ish.

Agree with Pete. Get a train to Charing X then walk. Takes about 15-20 mins to walk all the way up Tottenham court road. Loads of fit birds on the train that you can try (and fail) to chat up too.

If you use the bike occasionaly then I'd go A2 then jump off at Sun in the Sands roundabout, cut across blackheath and go down Maze or Crooms hill (either side of Greenwich park). Go along Creek road towards Jamaica road then cross at London Bridge then go along Upper Thames/Embankment. Turn up Northumberland ave then on to Strand then up T.Court road.
Alternatively jump off at Kidbrooke (or still Sun in sands) and go through Lewisham/new Cross then go down Old Kent road. can then cut up Great Dover street to London Bridge or go along to Elephant & Castle then up to Waterloo Bridge from there.

I ride everyday to work (Dagenham ---> Moorgate[city]), unless it is snowing, very heavy rain or bike isn't working.

Cost: Tube = £8 per day. Bike = under £10 per week (free parking, free conjestion)
Time: Tube = 45-60 minutes. Bike = 25-35 mins

Clothing = luckily I don't have to wear suits. I purposely buy clothes that are 'non-iron' so I just wear my textiles over my clothes. My hubby works in a Bank so he has to dress smart. He is fine in his shirt and work trousers under his textiles.
