Homemade DIY Nunchuks

So yesterday, i was at my mates house who i train with at kickboxing, and i finally got the chance to learn how to use nunchuks. I liked it. i liked it a lot.

Ordered some off the net last night, but decided to make my own today

(i'd already made them by the time i took the pics lol, forgot to take along the way)

Using a piece of spare hardwood we had laying about, i measured 13 inches and marked it with some elec tape

Cut them to size using hacksaw

Drilled in two holes near the top and one through the middle from top down

laced in strong shoelace and tied together!

sanded down so nice and flat too somewhere in between...

sorted they feel a very nice weight (quite light) for training with for the first time, the ones i have ordered are hardwood with a metal chain (5") with handle length of 12". the ones i have made here are 13" (but still 5" shoelace chain lol)

I am uploading a video of my first day with my own homemade nunchuks to youtube right now. I do not pretend i am a master or expert, i have only just learnt the basics. I havent edited the video to cut out the bad bits, obviously i make a few mistakes but i like to think i am getting the hang of it video will be up in next half hour!

I remember the last time I had a decent pair of nunchukas, I'd been doing TKD for a good few years, and had just purchased them from the Seni martials arts convention, so went out into the back to start becoming Bruce Lee.

I woke up about 15 minutes later slumped on the ground with a real nasty pain at the top of my head like I'd been wacked really hard with.....nunchukas.

They remained on my shelf from then on

Me and my boy tried making some homemade jobbies. We used broom handle from B&Q, and a bit of chain from there too.

They sort of worked, and looked really good, but really needed a thing on top of each nunchuck that would allow the chain to spin freely. That was the only bit we had trouble finding.

But after hitting many a knuckle/chin/head we eventually bought some soft training ones. They were much better for practicing, and a lot less painful!

Wow!!!! 3 quarter trousers and flip flops, quite gay for somebody doing martial arts and playing with nunchucks lol.

I used to play with fire poi's a lot, I would rather hit myself in the head with a nunchuck than I would with a fire poi. I burnt my forehead because I was drunk playing with fire lol.

My first thought is that the chord is far too short and the sticks are about 20% too long.

Chord length looks about right, I seem to remember it needing to be slightly longer that the width of the back of your hand. This allows you to switch your grip on the 'chucks without swapping hands.

Here's my thoughts:

Whilst they're fun to piddle around with, all the 'flashy' shit (wrist rolls etc) is wholly ineffective and therefore 'pointless'.

You can't carry them legally (going equipped etc), so you'd be better off learning to be a 'human weapon' from an SD perspective.

All that aside, they are good fun to flip around with, and any aficionado of Enter the Dragon shouldn't be without a pair.

I'm inclined to agree with the inimitable mistergixer on a few fronts, particularly the rolls and assorted flash. In some cases it can serve a purpose (intimidation) but in the main it's just pretty patterns and an invite for an opponent to come through it whilst you're swinging with no power. If you're serious about the weapon then learn to whiplash accurately, you will hurt yourself in the process but it's well worth the trouble.

Still got my steel extendible 'chuks around but with the UK constabulary coming down so hard on anything even remotely resembling a means of self defence there's no way in hell I'd go out with them on my belt these days.

Learnt a few new moves, such as the palm spin (not in video) and figure of 8s with palm spin (in video). getting the hang of finding the attacking moves, bedroom makes it rather difficult though...
