The missus let it slip last night that she's booked me in for the das in september! Now I'm really excited about this but I did my cbt about a month ish ago and although I am already bored of my 125 I'm not sure if I'l have enough experience by september.

I know that some people have passed there das within a week and they never rode a bike before but everyones different!

Well I guess I should get my theory out the way now

Not really the most exciting post I know but I just wanted to share my excitement Thumbs Up

P.s G/f's are useful for some things Laughing

good luck.

get as much road riding in between now and the course date just to gain experience but don't worry too much as any decent training school will be honest with you and won't put you through your test until they believe your ready.

at the end of the day they are there to get you through your test not bleed you dry.

I am one of those people then bought a CBR600F. Thumbs Up

Definitely do your theory beforehand, makes things easier.

Get lots of practice in, try doing some u-turns etc. it will make your instructors life a lot easier if you can already do them. Laughing

fair play to you Thumbs Up

And thats another thing, when I hopefully pass, I am not sure what bike to go for. I think what makes it a harder choice is that I like alot of different style of bike. I love the sportsbikes but will probably go for something like a hornet to get me to work and back but still be fun.

It doesn't help sitting on the internet all day at work and getting sidetracked looking at bikes Smile

this might help.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5f8YyaxqO0

module 1 is the hardest part they say and its all about slow control. my training course had a slot booked at the test ground the day before so we could walk around the test site which did help.

practice slow control when ever you can. first gear and keep the revs busy and feather the clutch, use the back brake only for slow control.

the swerve test and emergency stop its important to get the speed up, if i remember right its flat out in second gear on the 500cc bike until i passed the speed traps and then swerve or emergency stop.

for mod 1 its all off road in a car park but you will fail if you dont do your checks, all of which the training school will hammer into you but its easy to forget.

mod 2 is the on road test, they say this is the easy part as its just a case of riding around to make sure your safe to be riding around on the roads. dont let them lul you into a false sense of security when they say its easier. i failed twice and passed the 3rd.

for that i would recomend practicing hill starts, parking up and pulling out on both clear roads and from behind parked cars. and practice reading the roads. eg, speed limits and lane discipline.

important things to remember on the road.... shoulder checks (lifesavers) every time you change lane do a check. every time you turn, check, roundabouts as u leave u need a check. they wont fail you for checking but they will for not checking and they will fail you for excessive checking. (while your looking over your shoulder your not looking ahead)

indicators must be turned off. you will fail if the examinor has to tell you to turn them off. as the place i done mine in said "theres a button to press on your right hand side, when your bored, press it"

hill starts and pulling out from a stop, make sure you look at the road behind you. i failed because i looked but didnt see. i pulled out and looked in my mirror wondering where that car came from. take a good look.

dont be too eager. first time i failed was cus i was jittery and wanted to get it over and done with. take your time and relax. its better to get a minor for undue hesitation than it is to get a fail for rushing and pulling out when u should have waited.

speed limits. read the signs. normal L plates the max is 45mph on a nat speed limit but on DAS course you've got a bigger bike and they expect you to stick to the national speed limit. so if its 60, do 60. when slowing down as you head into a 30, mirror check and tap the back brake, this shows the examiner behind that you have indeed saw the sign and are acting accordingly.

sorry its long winded. but hope it helps

Dont mind it being long winded, I'm at work so got plenty of time to read up!

Thanks for some advice, seemed to be some helpful info in there.

Ive had my car license for about 6 years now so I don't really have a problem with road signs and normal road mannerisms etc. Its just transferring it over to a bike and adapting things.

And also if somebody could answer? What is the process with failing the mod1 and 2, do you have to pay extra each time you fail and come back?

if you fail mod 1 you have to rebook but you cant for 3 days. if its mod 2 then its 7 days.

you will have to pay the full test fee again and possibly the training school for the bike hire and instructor for both tests.

i passed mod 1 right away, mod 2 i had to do 3 times, each time cost me £140 which broke down as £70 for the actual test with the DSA and £70 for the hire of the bike and instructor for half a day to take me to and from the test site.

Did I just read that right? That an L plated motorcyclist can only ride at 45mph in NSL zones?

Yes, that is correct. And here in Northern Ireland. For 1 year from passing your test you are on R plates instead of L plates and you are restricted to 45 for that period.

What the hell are you talking about? Has that been edited away?

And C-Pk the way you say 'and here in northern Ireland' Implies you are confirming that on mainland UK L platers can't go faster than 45 mph.

If this is the case then you are talking nonsense.

Not this side of the Irish Sea.

Since when??? That sounds extremely dangerous if you are driving on a national speed limit road at 15mph under what everyone else *should* be doing. Or 25mph if its a dual carriageway with a central reservation.

i stand corrected. it isnt this side of the irish sea that its 45mph in nat speed limits.

i started driving in northern ireland and have only lived in england a year. so havent really fully checked up, for that im sorry.

back home its only 45mph for nat speed limits.
