Cars? Insurance etc...

Seeing as summers nearly bloody over now and I have been looking for a 125 for about 2 months, I'm thinking of pussy'ing out of getting a bike for the winter. I will definately get round to it next summer though

So, I think I have a general idea of what car I want... I'm 17 btw and doing practical soon =]

Citroen saxo 1.1 ? Insurance is 1,200

Peugeot 106 1.5 diesel? Insurance is 1,290

Or any other Diesels or small petrol's, and 1.4 petrol is around 1,500 to insure

All this is mad as around 3 months ago I was getting quotes for a 306 1.9 Turbo Diesel of £995 !

What do ya'll think diesel vs petrol or shall I just man up and get a 125?

Buy my 125, get a years NCB and use that for a car if you wish to.

Car insurance, especially at your age is a con. (even at my age, 21, it takes the piss)

I've done 3 winters on a bike and while I do have a car now, I'd rather be on a bike

Winter is the best time to learn!

If you can ride in Winter conditions, you can ride in anything.

I started in the winter, I've had a couple of drops, but nothing too serious.
All I'd say is get yourself up and running on a bike before October before the practical tests change again.

Get your license and ride when it suits you.

Spend a bit on the right kit and that side of winter riding is fine - most people have issues because of entirely inappropriate kit (including me in my first years of riding.)
At least the extra spent on that you'll have for years to come, as opposed to the amount spent on car insurance!

Get a fiat cinquecento. Cheap to insure and tax. My fiesta diesel is just under 200 quid to insure and my suzi 550 is 89 quid but i am slightly older.

Saxo's/106's and your asking for a nice insurance premium, go for something really ugly try a Kia pride lol, The quote's you have had on the saxo aren't that bad compared to the young lad who lives next door to me he's paying over 2k on a 1.1 saxo.

Buy a 125 of the cg variety and save the pennies then next year if you want to use the no claims on a car.

You're going to get reamed on car insurance however you try to play it, you're 17.

Ride through winter, with decent gear. Learn to accept that on some days the conditions will just be too bad and you won't be able to ride and take the bus or stay at home.

Seriously, decent gear is the way forward. With my textile onesie I can ride through anything.

And Robby, definately - Buses are shit but gotta be better than risking life and limb early in the morning. ( In Ice or snow )

And yeah, those prices are definately the best I'm going to get - Tesco's are the best and that's me as an additional driver with my dad who has 9+ NCB

This sounds vaguely familiar...

When this happened to me, it was £1.5K to get insured for my mum's car. Or £200 for TPFT on a CG125 (£110 for TPO ).

Still haven't got round to getting that car license

I calculated a short while ago (for a mate) that without trying too hard, you can get sorted out (bike, insurance, kit, CBT and all that stuff), without "knowing anyone", on a 125 for £1K, all in (people can and do do it for half that). Personally, i spent more than that (e.g. got my full license rather than just CBT, but it's a case of how far you want to go - i caught the bug myself), because i insist on doing things properly (and as i said, caught the bug). To be fair my first lot of gear only lasted a year or so (due to accidents and wear and tear), but i did spend less than the £1.5K insurance premium all considered. This is all of course, ignoring the car lessons and tests (anything up to £700+) and everything else you need to pay for with cars from parking to petrol.
