Need logbook advice

I have a little problem that I am hoping people can help me with.

When I went to buy my RGV250 the guy there had the logbook however it was already filled in with his details in pen so I couldn't fill in my details. He told me instead of him sending that off to DVLA to get it in his name and then having to send it off for me I should just apply for a new one. I was a bit nervous about the whole thing so I rushed and agreed.

He gave me the little green tear off bit from the bottom so I can tax it etc.

It doesn't really bother me the fact that it's not in my name (as thats his problem) but it does bother me that when I do come to sell it I will not have a log book.

So basically I need to know how do I apply for a new log book? What is there to stop the other chap saying 'hang on a min, I never sold that bike, its in my name etc etc'

Mike, fill in a V62 from your local post office, post it back to the DVLA along with a cheque for £19.

And then the DVLA will contact the old owner to confirm he sold it, and then send you a V5C.

They are changing all this stuff at the moment, what you used to do is go to the post office and fill in a form V65 and the new log book would arrive presently.

You have the green bit. That is a legal document, sending off the V5 is not your responsibility but the sellers (there was a TV advert about this five minutes ago)

Alternativley, speed and park with impunity then deny all knowledge of the bike in the remote chance he remembers your address.

should be easily sorted, the bros didnt come with one, but i have one now, the dealer i bought it off said he applied for it he thinks, i reckon he was just too lazy to go look for it, i got a receipt however, filled in one of them V62 jobs, and was sent the log book 6 weeks later in the new design, happy day

It does seem a bit weird to me aswell, if he hadn't sent it himself if makes you wonder why he was selling, and was it his to sell or was there a major problem with it when he bought it and sold it on?

I hope you did a HPi Check on it before you bought it Mike to confirm it wasn't stolen etc?

I just recently bought a bike too, the V5 didn't turn up so I contacted the DVLA filled in the V62 and sent £19 Payment to get it and I know for a fact they contact the last recorded registered keeper so confirm the sale etc.

If you have the bottom tear off slip then I don't think the DVLA can charge you.

In which case it is either their fault for loosing it, or the previous owners fault for not sending it in. In either case you should not have to pay as you are not asking for a duplicate.

He said that it was his brothers bike or something like that, the log book all matched up with the bike. I did check it before agreeing about his crap log book idea.

As far as I know it is his offense in the eyes of dvla as he hasn't reported the fact he sold the bike so i am not in the worng or anything. I would like the log book eventually though so I might go call in at the DVLA offices and see what they say about it.
