Does anyone use an ISP that works properly without a wireless router? if so which company and router?

My sky wireless router also has ports for wired connections.
You can always use your own router with which ever isp you use. I've used a netgear box with virgin, bt and talk talk.

I use my own router with BT

went to sky internet for a bit, went straight back, but found i needed to find my user name and password (nothing a bit of googling and downloading didn't solve)

You can use a non-wireless router with any ISP

Just make sure you get the right type for the ISP you're with (cable/ADSL).

If you're not comfortable with having wireless at your house/flat, you could always go into the router setup pages and disable wireless. I've done this for a friend because he wasn't happy with the router being close to where he sleeps.
Maybe I've misunderstood you question. Let me know if this helps...

My wireless connection is fine in 95% of the house. The bits where it doesn't pick up require e.g. using a different seat on the couch is all. Even the cordless phone and microwave don't cause too many issues because a/ the wifi equipment is able to tune out the different signals of the phone, b/ the microwave isn't a high-leakage bag of crap.

What DID cause me problems for a while until I diagnosed it was my router defaulted to the same channel that like 4 of my neighbours were on. Massive interference and congestion. Swapped it to one that was well out of range (and changed the SSID to "keep off channel X please") and haven't had problems since. I bet all 4 of them think that Wifi is inherently terrible...

Get Network Stumbler, it's great for working out these kind of things.

The alternative is that your place is built like where I work. A largely reinforced-concrete (...and asbestos) monstrosity from the 60s. The iron rebar running through it acts as a faraday cage, we've installed the legal max amount of wifi access points that we can get away with (all turned up to max strength) and coverage is still a bit patchy... even though you can use it the other side of a courtyard if you have line-of-sight to an AP through a window.

was that I'd actually changed it 2 or 3 times already, and every time I did it people seemed to get upgraded routers and they ended up on our channel. (Or they just did it to be bastards, in which case it makes no difference). Can't be having with scanning the local airspace once a week just to see if it's happened again, and have no other name to give our access point, so...

No fear of attracting bandwidth leeches, we're on the absolute cheapest package Laughing
