Currently my bike is pretty damn loud and I'm trying to find a way of making it quiet. Currently I have a seal off the top of the airbox off since having it in made the bike go to crawling speed whenever I tried to pull away. To reduce the idle slightly and the noise I will be putting this annoying seal back on.

Putting my hand over the end of the exhaust takes away alot of the noise so I know the problem mainly will be coming from that however I do not have money for an exhaust and will be selling it within 2 weeks.

any other ideas what can be done to the 50cc to shut it up a little?

Different end can will help. If you have a standard end can then you might have some internal problems. Generally 50's are bought be inexperienced newbies who register on here the next day asking how to derestrict it with the assistance of a cordless drill. The average person through hearing average road cars, and seeing formula 1 on TV has made the connection that loud = fast, all 18 year olds want the fastest bike known to man and will probably pick the louder 50 every time Laughing

I know going for a 4 stroke would solve the problem however I'm picking up a zxr 400 tomorrow to ride when I pass my test however this problem needs to be sorted first as i'm coming up to selling it in the next few weeks.

Can you remove the end of the silencer?
Often the bit with a hole in is held on by screws or rivets around the edge.
If you can take it off, its possible that some-one previousely took it off, and 'forgot' to put the packing back in....
again, ideas of loud=fast.
You can buy fibre-glass exhaust paking, if you have a look around, but its basically the same stuff as luft insulation.
for the amount you need, lifting the hatch to your attic and pulling a few tufts out the insulation should provide ample to take a bit of the sting out the sound!
More helpful?

Teflon Mike that's more useful compared to "Pack the zaust with mud" and "get ride of the 2 stroke and buy a 4 stroke!.

I took the silencer off a few days back and it still has the padding which is a particular size to fit/standard packing so surely I shouldn't need any as none of the holes are blocked inside and the padding still has life left in it.

Hi

The padding is often sold in moto cross bike shops. Over time the stuff compresses (from absorbing the noise and being soaked in oil / petrol residue) and lands up absorbing less noise and needs replacing.

If you want a short term bodge then use glass fibre loft insulation (it is a lot finer, but will do the job for a short while).

Also check if there is any kind of seal at the end that has worn out. Eg, on my TZR250 there is a foam ring around the end of the baffle to seal it against the rest of the can. This also compresses and starts to leak.

Can you post a piccy of the exhaust and baffle?

All the best

Keith

don't you want to explain the real reason you need it to be quieter

*sigh* knew I shouldn't of told you why Chris Laughing

Right guys the real reason behind getting this done is because I recently changed my wheel bearings after they got a tad fucked and then attached the wheels back onto the bike. After they were on i ragged it up and down my short road a couple of times to make sure nothing was loose so I wouldn't have any problems a few miles from my house.

Soon as I pull up on my driveway neighbours start shouting abuse at me saying how the bike it too loud and has an illegal exhaust etc, the other stuck up neighbours who she's friends with come out and join in and simply wont accept an apology. They demand to speak to my mother who backs me up and then the police are called and several complaints are made.

The police turn up to my house the next day and talk to us and ask me to start my bike. After trying to spend ages looking for my keys so they don't bother waiting trying to hear it I give in and grab them and start the bike, they hear it's a bit loud due to having a turbokit exhaust on and a rubber seal on the airbox removed which makes it run properly but also idles a tiny bit higher. They tell us they will arrange to have VOSA check how loud the bike is.

That night the exhaust is reverted back to the crappy old rusty technigas pipe and now I'm trying my best to make it quiet even though it's just as loud as my friends fully legal aprilia rs50, well except on idling anyway Wink

ok heres the plan.... let the police send vosa round to test. if they find that the exhaust noise is within the legal limit then fuck the neighbours

i'd take great pleasure in pissing them off as often as possible knowing the police have had the bike tested

Hi

Noise is VERY difficult to check subjectively. 3db is barely noticeable but is a doubling of noise.

Almost certain that any aftermarket sports exhaust is going to be too noisy, especially if a bit old.

All the best
