PostPosted: 20:32 - 23 Jul 2010    Post subject: Tropical Aquarists? Reply with quote

Just been given (last saturday) a 60L tropical tank. Always wanted fish since I was a kid but never really had the money or inclination to set myself up. The tank has been well established for a few years now so I've been lucky in as much that I haven't had to properly cycle it as if it was new.

I'm a complete novice at the mo, but I've been doing a fair bit of research this last week, and bought myself my first few fish yesterday.

Any other aquarists out there? Any good links to sites with decent info etc?

Cheers.

I have a Ghost Koi in my bedroom in a tank. Until he's large enough to go in the pond. He's called Colin.

https://newaquariuminformation.com/

google for some other sites mate alot of them share alot of mutual information regarding tank heating/filtration/common diseases and things to look out for, etc.

It sounds like you're doing everything so far correctly! If you get chatting to people at aquarium shops and the such, you can pick up a lot of information from them without knowing it really.

Only recently have I stopped fishkeeping with tropicals but I reckon I'll end up doing it again soon.

Good luck with it fella!

Steve

With Mushy Peas, Gravy or Curry Sauce?

I'll upload some pics I have of the big pond they have in Singapore Airport. It's nice and relaxing just sitting watching the fish. I did accidentally hit one with a 5p Shifty

I don't know, I always like to taste it first to see what would accompany it the best. What do you reckon goes well with Ghost Koi.

Well at the moment I've got:

6 Neon Tetras (I bought 5 of these yesterday)

2 Glass Catfish

1 Upside down Catfish

6" Common Plec

2 Swordtails

10 Mollies

2 Rosy Tetras

The ones in italic and brackets are what I bought yesterday, the rest were all in there. There was a large Angel (4" wide and 5" high) and since I swapped him, the others have been a LOT happier, seems he was a bit of a bully.

Haha cool, yeah Angels can be Devils sometimes:P

I would reccomend cardinals instead of neons even though higher price, neons tend to not live as long and cardinals have a full stripe or red and blue, but hey I have both they are cool Laughing

Angel fish are mis-named, they're evil buggers.

When I had a tank I like the silver sharks. Also had some danios - they shoal well.

They're Koi too.

Does the airport still have the free cinema? I've not been there for 10+ years, last time i went they were showing 'Raising Arizona', followed by a healthy does of cheesey '80s/90's martial arts flicks - Chuck Norris, Don 'The Dragon' Wilson etc etc.
I love Raising Arizona, but have to confess to nodding off (and apparently snoring loudly) through the cheese.

As for aquariums, i'm in the process of turning mine into a paludarium so i can house another Rainbow Crab - the last one (Mr Pinchy) sadly died a couple of years ago.

Since my Oscars died (probably about 4 years ago) i lost my interest in aquariums, and went from having 4 tanks, down to 1 tank (Mr Pinchy + Guppies and Platies), down to none.

However, after a recent trip to the seaside and a spot of rockpooling, my youngest boy is desperate for us to get another crab.
