Me bike will not start when hot. I thought the starter motor brushes but i changed the motor today and it is still the same. If i stop for half an hour it is ok but any less it wont spin. The motor will turn but sound like a flat battery and give up after 3/4 attempts. Battery is a good un. I dont have a temp guage so i am thinking now over heating. anyone any other ideas?

Cheers

So the bike runs fine, you turn it off, press the starter for 5 seconds, it spins the engine but doesn't catch? = running too rich. Someone has attempted to make it go faster by making the mixture richer, this has fucked things up.

Engine doesn't spin, or only spins for about 10-15 seconds before it won't spin any more? = won't start as battery is too flat. That starter motor consumes shit loads of power leaving none for the spark plugs o spark properly and start the engine. Either the bike has been used for lots of short trips not giving the battery time to charge, or the charging circuit is faulty, probably the reg/rec.

Only thing that is not original is the brakerless ignition. Last two owners were mature. Bike is an old GS550 so no going faster modes made, still has Suzuki 4 ino 2 pipes and proper air box.

Its is like a lazy starter motor but will only turn 2/3 times then nothing. If i go back say 1 hour later it will be fine. I took it out last sunday for a run and never looked at it again till today and did a 25 mile trip, nipped into a shop and it started again. Bump start and went home. Changed starter and fired it up, sounded strong and did a 5 mile hard ride blast. Stoped and the bugger needed a bump again. Parked up when i got home and drank beer and posted this.

I am thinking overheating Confused

Forgot to say, last owner only used the bike for work but his trip was 40+ miles each way so i doubt short trip problems. I will do the battery checks in the morning but i am doubting this is at fault.

Ignition. Check that they have spaced it correctly, and its set up right.

Take the starter motor off and have a look at the inside. Could be that some bits have worn down.

Doub't its overheating.

Sounds like a knackered battery to me. They can behave like that when they're old and a 20Ah battery has the capacity to hold 2Ah.
