Soooooo I want a Honda Cub

Right,

As some of you may know I already own a monkey bike and while its fun and amusing to ride, I want something a bit more practical for work.

In less than a week I will be moving back to Chester to begin a new job as an ASP.NET developer and I am looking for something cheap to get me around the city and to places like Cheshire Oaks during my down time there.

Now the Monkey Bike would be great for this expect that it is my baby and I don't want it to get stoled or run into the ground. I'd rather keep it as my "show bike" and as I am currently working on it, it may be off the road for sometime.

I've looked at Honda Cubs before and they seem to fit the bill quite well. However I am undecided which model to go for C70 or C90? and if they will be able to stand the grit and general crap on the roads over winter.

SoooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo BCF have any of you used one on the daily basis? Which model is the best? Will women continue to fall to my knees? OR is there a better bike out there for me?

I forget the specifics, but c90 does overall have a bit more go, though think some of the c70 stuff was more advanced.

They do have a lot of metal which can rust, but reckon a decent coating of ACF50 should do the job.

Unless you want 'compatibility' with your monkey bike parts, but still want a cheap to run slow bike, I'd go with a cg or similar personally.

If you do still want a cub, I should soon have this for sale; recently passed MOT, waiting for v5 to come through so I can get tax -

However, I'd more be intending to aim it at those that want to do scooter racing first - though it is totally standard bar no front bit of the front mudguard and currently having trials style tyres.

Lock the bike up well in chester or it will go walkies, my brother caught someone trying to nick his from outside his gfs house in the middle of the day.

With work that wouldn't be a problem. One of the guys rides a Enfield Bullet that is parked outside all day. I intend to do the same with whatever POS I decided to buy.

The office is inches away from the front door, where the bike will be sat so I can watch it all day.

A chav with taste may pick that over a shagged Cub but you never know. It's either a cub or an SR125.

What did you dislike about it that you think you'll like about a cub?

Any small cc fairly light bike tends to be a target for chav/pikey kids.

Its mainly because of the Monkey Bike obsession that I looked at a Cub. Like you said, interchangeable parts and the like.

I can't really put my finger on why I disliked the CG but I think the main reason was that I didn't find it "fun" to ride as such. Also I found it a little boring and plain.

I thought at least with a cub, I'd be able to throw it around, rag the hell out of it and ride it in stupid places without the fear of it getting damaged or me caring?

The original "big block" C90 is a good balance of performance and economy. Much better than the later Cub 90 which is based on the C50 / 70 architecture but is no faster and a bit less frugal than the C70. However in cheap transport terms just buy the tidyest example available because they rot like fuck.

get a cg125! nothing better for a commute. bullet proof and has a bit more poke for those daring overtakes on 40 limit roads!

had one for 2 months, great fun.

long long ago in the dim and distant past when men still wore hats and dragons roamed the earth , i owned a C90.

Alright about twenty years ago and it was indestructible and not a lot slower than the 4-stroke 125`s of the day.
I never did anything to mine apart from top up the oil and pump up the tyres, i think i tightened up the chain now and again.
I just used to get on it and ride it in any weather and it always started .
If you dont care about image and want a bike that will always forgive you, get a C90 .
They do rust if you dont paint under the rear wheel area/mudguard, but i never bothered because i knew it would outlast it`s last MOT.
Those leading link forks are a whole new experience, but not that bad

I've got a 83 C70C with a Lifan 110 lump in it.

4 speed, cruise at 45-50, 120 mpg, been a right laugh. Engine's done 4,000 and hasnt burnt any oil. So, so cheap to run.

Take out the back wheel and waxoyl the underneath of the mudguard. Jobs a good 'un.

Other options are the later Honda Innova 125cc stepthrough or the shaft driven Yamaha Townmate 80cc which didnt rot as quickly as the Honda.

I had a C90 Cub and it was one of the least reliable bikes I've ever owned. It was a huge step backwards from the old rapid rust steppies, despite the 12V electrics and fuel gauge. The main problem was the motor's susceptibility to being thrashed - exhaust valve used to burn out with boring regularity. Fuel consumption was also crap considering extremely simple design and lack of go. My SS50 used to do 160+mpg. The Cub did about 90. I've regularly go that from my RXS100 over the years.

The C70 Cub is rare but excellent. I doubt you could find one of those, so an old 70 would be my choice. They are immensely tough and cheap to run, if you can live with a top speed of around 45.

Exhaust valve will only burn out if the clearance is tight, and it's not exactly hard to check and adjust the valves. You'd notice a drop in compression before you did any damage, too.

And I get 120mpg from the 110, and that is used very hard, with an open pipe, bigger carb etc. Although I do always warm it up and service it regularly.

No, exhaust valve burned out because the Cub engine didn't like unleaded fuel. Finally twigged and switched to four star, after which it never did another valve.

Clearance was 0.02mm - virtually impossible to have it too tight without there being no gap at all lol

i purchased a cub90 on g plate blind via ebay.it was 220 quid!!!saw pics looked pretty clean it started and ran so the guy delivered it for my while i was at work!!

got home had alook seemed clean enough.put it through mot needed a brake cable 10 quid.

put a new exhaust on it 35 quid!!

i ride it daily to work about 6 or7 miles 4 times a day it great!!about 5quid a week on fuel!!!

i for one will always own a cub 90 i love it.get one hopefully with a box too!!!

as for the lifan engine i think ill start a new thread???
