A few weeks ago on a stag do we spent some time in a casino, was the first time I've seen a cash poker table as opposed to the usual tournament tables. Didn't do too badly, and it made to ch ge to actually have to think about my next move since there was real cash involved.

Anyways, pretty skint at the moment so I figured the best way to solve that would be to take up gambling. So anyone play poker online for cash? What site do you use? Which is the best and why? Being a novice I doubt I'm quite ready for the £50 buy-ins just yet, so anything with small bets is welcome primarily.

Funny you should say that, I just came 5th in a 8.80 rebuy addon tournament on stars (58,000$ prize pool).

I went out when some guy shoved all in and I called on the turn. He had a 12% chance to win.

He won, and went on to win 9,600$ for first place.

I will be traumatised for months, this guy in question was down over 3.2k$ before this tournament and played so badly.

Despite this and the amount of people who call the website 'jokerstars' I do not believe there is any higher proportion of bad beats there than anywhere else.
Full tilt poker has the advantage that you can sign up through a rakeback site for 27% rakeback which you wont get close to unless you become a goldstar + on pokerstars.

What do you mean by bad beats?

Isn't the rake the percentage which the site takes for their commission? What's a rakeback site? <----- You can tell I'm a complete novice to this, hence why I'm not gonna stroll into any type of game which is going to cost me anything significant till I know my way around. I guess you could say that I know how to play poker as far as the basic rules go, but I need to develop how to REALLY play poker with regards to strategy and learning all this crazy lingo.

Had never heard that name before, but a quick check on wikipedia seems like his autobiography would be worth a read Thumbs Up

One boring evening I had a go at online roulette, probably 888.com but not sure.
They let you play with imaginary money to try it, I got up to about half a million then they cut me off.

I hope that can't happen when playing properly. Razz

Used to be a regular on paradisepoker.com was back in 2003 before all the graphics and animated characters kicked in. Used to love it. Lost more money than I won in the end so decided to jack it in.

The only way to play is to play really tight and throw every hand away that is anywhere near shite. On the flop i'd throw away stronger hands if I didn't land a pair/two pair/three of a kind. This is how I first got into poker and sticking to this way of playing I made over $500. But then you get cocky and start trying to bluff people and call stupid hands which means you loose a shit load. The trick is to just be as patient as you possibly can and ignore the urge to call someone all in because you think they are lying.

I once won a $10 tourney which won me a seat to a $100 buy in, I won that and won a seat to a $1,000 buy in, and during this tournament I was doing really well, however the first tournament started at 10pm, each one lasted around 2 hours, and there was an hour break between each tournament. So by the time I was at the last one, having drunk almost a bottle of bells whisky, and smoked around 50 rollies I just couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. The prize pool was around the $50,000 mark if I remember correctly. Ended up loosing and coming like 110th and winning fuck all for my efforts. GUTTED!!!

Rebuy means you can pay again to get the same amount of chips (for 8.00) and addon means you can pay again (8.00) to get a bit better value, addons are only available for a short time after the rebuy period is over; there are restrictions as to how many chips you have when you rebuy, as in you cant pay 100$ to get a massive stack at the beginning.

I entered the cards -to the turn, this is where 90% of the money went in- in to this odds calculating site. The turn is the fourth card to be dealt to the table, meaning there was only one card left to draw when the money went in.

You can sign up to a poker site such as fulltiltpoker.net through a 'rakeback' partner eg: rakebrain.com. You will then at the end of each week get 27% (varies from site to site) of the rake....given back to you, you can see why this is very good; in fact if you are playing cash games you may find most of your profit is rakeback- If i played cash I would probably use full tilt.
You sign up to rakebrain BEFORE you make you pokersite account, and pokerstars currently does not do rakeback but they have a better in house rewards system than full tilt (full tilts one is ok though).

I had never heard his name before but I am sure it was a dig at me, not sure why I can't be proud of making over a 2000$ cash, I have not embellished the details of the hand in anyway if perhaps that is what he was implying.

Probably the fastest I've lost £20 lol.

I'm a twat because within 5 minutes I was £25 up, why why why the fuck didn't I call it a night there and then!? Well I put it down to being a fookin noob and getting a bit too happy. Bollocks. I'll just keep practicing and Reading a bit of strategy before I bother outing any more cash in.

Pokerstars is the biggest, best way is make some money and leave table .. keep doing that ..

You need to leave money behind, to allow for joining a cash game and getting busted with ot without the best hand ..

So when you had 45 .. leave join another table with twenty ... Thumbs Up

I know I know, it wasn;t the only place I;d read saying "Win and leave", I suppose everyone has to learn the lesson for themselves though.

Oh and I didnt reply to one of your questions.
A 'bad beat' is basically where you get very unlucky.

Normally where a lot of money has gone in (in relation to pot size or stack size) and someone who was very far behind outdraws you when he has very low odds.

For example AA vs 22 all in pre flop is a bad beat.

KQ vs A2 on a KJQ5 board, all in then 10 on the river. Thats a bad beat.

Yeah I get ya.

The past couple of days I've largely been reading around https://www.poker-strategy.org and I've come to realise I knew how to play poker, but I had no idea HOW to play poker, if you catch my drift. Think it will be a long time before I lay cash on the table again since I've a lot of learning to do.

Just looked up Stu Ungar, that is a mad record.

He must be a lucky fucker aswell as being amazingly skilled. My blackjack play is terrible I can barely remember basic strategy when in a casino and card counting/steering is just a pipe dream. I find it staggering that people could do that, if only I was a genius.
Ah well at least I can make money in poker thats good enough for me Smile
