200mile ride out on Sunday :)

Hi guys, I'm finally going to have a proper ride out with a friend of mine this coming Sunday

We're planing to go south to Hastings, then westbound through Eastbourne, Brighton and coming back up in Worthing and then maybe stop at Rykas Cafe (which will be a first as well).

The route we're planning is something like this:

Can you give any advise or even suggest better roads or roads not to be missed along this route? As well as roads to avoid if any.

Would suggest the above - the seafront road to Brighton is rubbish as is A23. Also would recommend taking in Whiteways cafe near Arundel (google BHB forums).

I've ridden pretty much this exact route before except I started in Hastings (where I live) and went up to Essex the same way as depicted here, then on to Hertfordshire, down through London to Leatherhead, down the A24 to the coast and along back to Hastings.

I'll literally never forget it. On the way down the A24 I drifted off (had been on the road for many, many hours) and when I opened my eyes again I was in the process of binning it. 50MPH highsides don't hurt as much as you think they would.

Anyway, I stuck the bike back together with some electrical tape I had and went back on my way and made it home.

Possibly also avoid Worthing and go via Steyning from Brighton to Arundel. Steyning bypass is nice road, especially the wiggly bits for a couple of miles before the A24 junction.

Nice knee down opportunity here (you'll be going west on A27 then north up A283. the slip is a nice long sweeper (new smooth tarmac) followed by massive roundabout with good vision and good surface - not usually very busy

Did you go then, what route? Thought today that I should have mentioned "The Chalet" on the A281 south of Cowfold - great brekkie and loadabikes.

Beachy Heads from the pub to the Birling Gap is quite fun - road is quite bumpy around Birling Gap. As usual though - too much traffic.

From Brighton to London, saw on the map the A281 sitting between A23 and A24 and decided, what the heck. Love road. Plenty of unrestricted and 50 mph road with towns peppered throughout. Nice bends, little hills and dips and surrounded by trees. Awesome. If only there are more of these sorts of roads. Does anyone know any others?

Hi guys. Yes I did go as planned and I enjoyed it so much...
Was my firts ride out and I'm in love with it. we did 2010miles

Right, we head Southeast out of London (nightmare even on a Sunday morning) via A20, took M25 and then A21 towards Hastings.
A20 is boring of course, M25 BORING, and the A21 gets much better halfway between Sevenoaks and Hastings.

then from Hastings to Eastbourne, always through the seafront, nice but not a biking road. Then in Beachy Head its exatcly as kbot says, quite fun and bumpy around Birling Gap.
Then towards Brighton, again not a very exciting ride but nice and with some occasionally nice scenery.

But then...... we had planned coming back up through A24 or A23 but luckily, when we check the map we just thought like kbot, what the heck... It was the best decision of all, I'm so glad we did that, the road is almost perfect I dare to say.
Quoting kbot:

Seriously guys, try the A281.

Wonder if it's still that good all the way to Guildford.
From now on it seems I will try more of the "orange" roads.

Then to finalize we stopped at Rykas Cafe but it was already late, so we just planned our way into London and took off. Didn't even go to the cafe itself so no opinion yet. But it's in a nice area though. Like the spot.

And that was it. All was very worth it just for the A281

This is probably what I will do next, from Rykas to Cowfold. That B road looks very nice as well (been checking with Street View on some points) and then A281 again.
