E.A.R Ultrafit Alternative (Ear Plugs)

I got a pair of E.A.R Ultrafit 20s today as someone was chucking them out at work and they are amazing compared to the crappy little foam ones. Only issue is, it's £38 for 50 pairs (from eBay). Does anyone know of any cheaper alternatives?

They are crap! I've got loads from work... different varieties and the ones that I have found that work well are the Moldex foam ones. The only benefit with the christmas tree jobbies are that they are reusable. For comfort and noise suppression, moldex performs better when I tested them in 3 different helmets. I get them free from work (as in I pilfered them and had enough supplies for a whole year (50-60 pairs).

They fit my ears better thus blocking out more sound. Plus I'm sick of having manky ear plugs after only a couple of squeezes and then fitting even worse after a clean. Foam ear plugs are crap.

The foam ones are meant to be one use only, i find it disgusting when i see people putting them back in!

I don't personally weird ear plugs (whether it used to be on the bike or at work) anymore but i always preferred the foam ones. Even the rubber, multiple use ones felt a bit weird re-inserting them.

I had www.customearplugs.co.uk do them at the NEC Bike Show, was £50 when I was there two years ago (although I did go for the £70 ones with the filter, as I play the drums with them in too), seems they've gone up by a fiver. Dunno if you'd have to drive to him for the moulds doing though. Telephone area code is for Doncaster.

Cheers. Unfortunately I'm nowhere near Yorkshire so that more or less rules that out. Out of curiosity, do you find yours much better than the foam ones (assuming you're using foam ones with a decent seal)?

Until recently the foam ones have done me fine, but the damn things don't seem to seal properly anymore, anyone'd think my ears had changed shape.

For noise reduction, my custom ones are about on a par with the purple/yellow squishy ones I used to use* (which were my favourite disposable ear plugs):

The custom ones come into their own in terms of fitment. With the disposables, I'd have to hold them in my ear until they'd fully expanded. If I didn't and they continued expanding whilst I put my helment on they'd sometimes try pushing theirselves out and I'd have to take my lid off to reseat them. With custom ones you just push/twist them in and they're done, no waiting for them to expand. This is also a benefit for when I'm drumming as I'm forever taking them in and out.

Comfort, probably on a par with the disposables again. Although they are a little less sweaty than the disposables, and I like the fact they're flush with my ear and don't get caught when putting the helmet on (not that the normal disposables did anyway).

One thing you notice though, if you move your mouth around and change the shape of your ear canal (like when you smile/laugh) you let a bit of sound through as the custom plugs don't expand like the disposables.

* I do have the ones with a filter though, which let a little more noise through apparently. Talking to people with the custom ones with the filter is a lot easier than with disposables.

if you're into disposables, then you might want to have a look at this:

It gives you the option of trying a few different styles out as it seems everyone is different.

I use these, which are pretty spot on. That same site does a 'sample pack' which gives you a load to try for not a lot of dosh.

Just a quick point while we're here.

Earplugs are well and good, but a noisy helmet is always going to be noisy.

From what I've seen there's a bigggg old difference in how much noise helmets let in.

You may be well advised to consider a quieter helmet instead and/or as well as new ear plugs.

I use docs proplugs for kayaking and stuff but people use them for music concerts and stuff to prevent hearing loss.

I find them really comfy. Even wear them playboating and they don't fall out, plus point is you can hear people with them in.
