weird one,.. 'visions/premonitions'?

Me, I think it's all cods-wallop.

Well, I did until last night.

I was driving through a 40 which is a major route in York, (Side of Nestle; just before the train line headin outta town) in a slighly spirited manner but no worries, nothing remotely dangerous when I approach the bend, at that point I have split second of clarity and think, if the level crossing aheads' lights come on, I may be hard pushed to stop given the distance, and I actually have a flash of the crossing in my 'minds eye' with the lights going, so I slow to about 30.

Then, as I get round the bend and hesitate for some lights coming on they actually do. Now, I said nothing, and slowed to a stop waiting for said train to pass..

When the lass who was in the car said "I just had a vision of you not slowing down and crashing right through that barrier" - now, this reflects on me driving like a nutter fair enough, but im not I just found it weird that this ONE time I approach this crossing I used a few times a week for like 5 years we both get the same 'thing', is it aliens? is it just a defense mechanism?

Anyone had similar? it kinda made me think; because slowing down and avoiding incident at that one time, lead to sooo many things happening yesterday that otherwise wouldn't, not cos we'd have been carted off but it was a normal sunday until that point.

Am I being a big girl and reading into this way too much?

It's because you think of it happening loads of times, but because it normally doesn't you pay no attention.

It's like that old joke about there always being a teaspoon left in the sink when you drain the water. Or thinking about a friend and then suddenly they phone you up. Happens very rarely, but you only notice it when it does happen, not when it doesn't.

Lmao... 'I thought it was all nonsense until this one time when I had a vision that if the lights were on, I'd probably have to stop, the girl with me also commented that if I hadn't stopped, it probably would have been bad. I've heard some stories in my time, but this defies all explanation'.

It happens to me all the time. Theres a road near me that drops down one side of a hill and climbs up the other side with a small bridge in the bottom that is give away (right of way for me going away from my house)

The amount of times i have had 'visions' of a car coming ploughing the other way without slowing down/stopping is unbelievable. Sometimes i just drive along and go accross it without slowing down and there is nothing there but quite a few times i have slowed down and stopped and there just happens to be a car (generally big 4x4's!) coming the other way with no intention of stopping.

It's like them car/bike journeys where you reach your destination but you have no recollection (sp) of the journey itself, driving along totally out of it day dreaming. But if something was to happen in front of you, you sort of 'snap out of it' instantly and react, it's weird

I had a friend who claimed they knew when their phone was going to go off as they had picked it up a couple of times and it had started ringing when they picked it up. I asked them, what about the hundereds of times before where they've picked it up and it hasn't gone off, they went quiet.

Maybe its just common sense shining through, on thight twisty back lanes, the ones where about 40 is the safe top speed, I often thing "fuck, what if a car came round a corner now"... Probably 50/50 a car does indeed come around a blind corner.

Its called common sense; if your stopping distance is greater than your visual distance then you are playing with probabilities anyway.

The "logical" reason for such premonitions (after coincidence, due to Occams razor) could be that your brain picks up tiny clues, lights on board train in the distance, sound of diesel engine (its always some huge wagon on the lanes) around corner etc etc and subconciously gives you a premonition feeling to warn you of an unpercieved hazard...

^^ Even that is a pretty sketchy theory , lets all roll with coincidence
