Question about theft insurance

Not sure if anyone's going to be able to give me a definite answer on this and I'm sure I'll have to call my insurers to find out but it's an interesting question that did make me think.

I have my bike insured third party, fire and theft. If I strip the bike down to the frame (which I am planning on doing over the winter) and a part of it is stolen (e.g. the engine) can I claim against my insurance?

i'd say no - suspect if you were fully comp, and someone nicked your engine you could *possibly* say it was vandalism and someone nicked it, but cant see it working on 3PF&T.

Cracking plan but it's an old divvy, don't think it'd make much of a track bike!

Most people have said just get rid of the rest of it, all seems a bit dodgy to me though.

Hi

I would suspect you would be covered. However it might well not be worth claiming, with excess and loss of no claims costing you a lot while the value of the bike would be tiny due to its current state. Ie, if the engine was stolen they would probably declare it a write off and give you well under half the book price for the bike (minus excess).
