Opinions.

Well, a new engine might well be just as bad as the old one, and a sorted engine would definitely be better.

However, find a cheap engine that you know is sound and you'll be laughing! Smile

Finding an engine to fit to it I say. You should be able to find one for less than that I reckon.

Then hang onto the old engine for spare parts and stuff. Thumbs Up

What needs doing to the engine? I'm sure one of the more mechanical people on here, or a collection, you strip it and poke it.

I assume it needs a new set of rings and its valves ground.

Camchain is 30 quid. Rings would be about 50. Valves should just need a clean.

find a better quote...keep looking round. There will be someone somewhere close to you who will do the work for way less than that. You must know someone with a mechanic in the family....

Get what you need in parts and then seek help. It may be heaps cheaper that way.

I have had an idea.

Why don't we run some sort of BCF stripdown and rebuild tutorial using poppy as an example? The more mechanically minded among us can all lend a hand, and it would be a useful learning experience for those of us who don't know a piston from a camshaft!

We have more than enough mechanical bods to make it work... all we need is a free weekend...

just a thought...

What you need is a friend who has done this sort of work before, take the bike round to their workshop along with a deckchair, a pack of beer and plenty of ciggies. They can then sit there with the workshop manual on their knee, smoking, drinking beer and pointing with a long metal ruler at things for you to do. I can think of worse ways to spend a weekend, done it for a couple of mates (even took my tools round to their house).

The sense of self satisfaction when you first start an engine you have rebuilt yourself is big enough to keep a smug grin on your face all week. Makes the bike seem more 'yours' too.

A stripdown day would be good. Of course, general apathy and organisation could be a problem.

However, if someone wants to arrange I'll happily work out another excuse to not show up.

Thats a skills for wheel and suspension bolts.

Inside the engine, people can't see the bolts. Why put them back in at all?

Hi Laura

I have had a look at the manual in the section for dropping the engine on Poppy. Looks like a remarkably easy bike to drop the engine. Difficult bit is likely to be removing the exhaust, and I think you have had that off a few times to repair it so that should be easy.

All the best

Keith

Phillistine, never a sledge hammer. Stick with a 4lb lump hammer, much better for detail work. Cool
