depending on the gap i filter to the front and stay in the middle, i know i have the acceleration to be able to pull in front before the cars so its not a prob

I filter to the front on my pedal bike.

Track stand whilst at the front and as soon as the lights change I f*ck off rather swiftly. Not caused me any problems yet but sometimes I feel a tw*t.

I don't cross the white line so if there's a gap in front of the leading car then I'll go into it, if not I'll stay between them.


If it's at a light controlled pedestrian crossing then I stay a couple of cars back as it's illegal to 'overtake' the leading car at a pedestrian crossing.

The only time I don't is if there are a pack of boy racers. Then I pootle at the back, and let them sit up the front and do that silly racy thing they like to do.

Otherwise, I snake my way through whenever I can ... twisting and trying not to catch my knuckles on wing mirrors.

If people see me coming, and pull over a bit to the left, I always make a point of smiling winsomely into their window and saying thank you.

So long as I can see when the light changes colour. I don't like it if I can't see that. Even if I have to crane my neck

I was encouraged to filter a lot on my way back from my test by my instructor. Used to do it on lessons from time to time because my instructor knew I could make a quick getaway.

These days I judge the junction, traffic conditions, state of drivers around me and I filter where it feels safe to do so. I do it less when I'm out with Mrs angryjonny as she's less used to being cheeky. It's pointless filtering if I'm going to have to stop and wait for her to catch up. She's getting more aggressive though. Soon she'll be as naughty as she is in a car.

I like trying to get down the middle of the two lines on Lower Thames Street, which is a proper bugger in the morning. Its really narrow and heavy traffic, always full of lorries. Most bikes go down the bicycle lane, but I hate having to do that, so if I possibly can, I go thru the middle, all the while telling myself "The bicycle lane is for PUSSIES!"

Only when its really dangerous/packed do I go down there.
I'll even sit not-at-the-front-of-the-lights, just to prove to myself that I'm not a bicycle-lane-using pussy.

I stop over the white line, in cycle boxes etc when I can.

I do not fancy being the meat in a two car sandwich because someone doesn't like me skipping the queue.

To quote the last old fuck that took offence and screamed at me for filtering:

"WHAT THE BLOODY HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE PLAYING AT!!! IT"S A RED LIGHT EVERYONES WAITING" after tooting and pulling up next to me.

Some people are mental and they are impossible to reason with because they don't have a clue and think they are right.

The reason it's done is to put me in a safer position. Obviously this assumes there is decent room between the white line and the actual junction.

Have good observations and you're unlikely to get caught. Just don't do it in front of traffic police.
