The other day my back end went at 50mph and it turned out I had a flat tyre, i got it fixed the next day and since then i am bricking it when I am turning even if it's at 15mph and I feel the back end go out a little bit still (this could be in my head) I had a very experienced biker look at my tyres and he said just to get a new pair and I will notice the difference, should I go out and buy a new set of tyres and how much am i looking at, or should I try carry on with these and try and test the tryes to get the mental thing out my head, thanks

Very helpful you pair.

a lot of it is probably in your head mate, your confidence has been knocked and you're now unsettled on your bike, which can make things worse, unless your opening it up round corners, then your back end shouldn't be going anywhere.

You will notice the difference on new tyres, because they're deadly until you've worn them in a bit.

If an experienced fellas looked at them and said buy new tyres, ask him why? Check the treads yourself against the minimum depth your meant to have. Or you can always post up a pic of the tyres, im sure someone here will insult your for chicken strips if you have any but they will prolly also tell you if they look rough too. Some smart cookies and experienced folks on this forum. Though I am not one of them Thumbs Up Mr. Green

thats us told off rappy dude!

seriously tho, get back on the horse n relax. try and forget it because your going to have a lot worse to contend with in your biking life.

doris and ethel out on a day trip doing 20 in a 40 zone

wet manhole covers on corners

leaves and white lines

twats pulling out in front of you

the glare of headlights in your visor in the rain

all of which are frustrating and can be very scary and thats just naming a few. the best thing you can do is just put it behind you and keep on riding

What tyres have you got and how worn are they?

The 'very experienced biker' who said you should get new tyres, was this person someone in a shop that sells tyres? Wink

Get someone who rides and you trust to take the bike for a spin around a car park. They should be able to tell if there is much wrong. Check your tyre pressure, suspension bolts and wheel bearings.

You're at an advantage compared to some who scare themselves, you know why the 'back end' went.
It can't be that bad as you're still riding. Thumbs Up
Sort out whether your tyres are at fault (were they behaving before the flat? ) I guess they were fine before and now you're riding tense.
Hey, maybe your tyres...suspension..bearings etc are knackered if in any doubt get them checked by someone who knows what's what. (Maybe a kind offer from a nearby BCF'er?)

BTW new tyres scrub in pretty quick <25 miles if you're steady and progressive with the power and lean angles.
Brand new tyres and riding in the wet and you will tip-toe Mr. Green

I know exactly what you mean mate, After i came off my bike at a small roundabout after the back end slid out it has taken me a while to get back to normal with my riding.
Turned out it was my rear shocks leaking on my tyre that caused the bike to slide, after changing them i felt i couldn't corner properly at all! Whenever turning right at small roundabouts i would tense up and take the corner at 'grannys' pace! Not to mention my line got all fu*ked up!
A couple of days ago, me, my uncle and a few other bikes went out to wales. Lots of bendy roads so i was a little worried, when i was behind my uncle i found myself thinking "You're not going to go into that corner at that speed are you!!!" But once i got over that, i just followed his line and started to relax. Before i knew it i was leaning in more comfortably than i've ever done before and was getting the right line too.
Basically what i'm saying is its all in your head, a bit more practice and it'll get better. Just have faith in your tyers, its their job to keep you on the road afterall. I found it was my upper body tensing up, arms etc. So when cornering now i try to make sure i have 'some slack' in my arms lol.
Have you put new tyres on? May be worth picturing the old ones.
If you do get new ones on, take it easy for the first few miles though as said previously.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

So are you saying that all the tyre companies selling tyres are selling DEADLY TYRES !!!! lmao....
in over 35years of having road bikes and countless new tyres iv never had a new tyre feel deadly/slip/slide in any way shape or form, what i have noticed straight away is the bike feels/handles slightly differently and noticibly more wet grip and within 10 mins of dry running i have the bike doing the same round bends as i did with the old tyres.
in the years i was couriering in london i was going through a set of tyres a month on average, as i change my front and rear as a pair always, thats a lot of tyres ! no problems with them whatsoever.
The deadliest thing ever put on a bike is the rider !

Oh I dunno, I am always warned by the shop to take it easy for the first 100 miles (I take it easy for 15), but there is some evidence new tyres are slippery apart from just feeling them.

it sounds to me that squared off tyres are ruining the feel of the bike when turning

get some nice new ones, and it will feel like a new bike

im a bit tight so i tend to keep tyres longer than I should, and whenever I replace them, i wish i'd done it sooner

1 thing i would not skimp on is tyres bearing in mind they are the only thing holding the bike on the road ! You can get a set of decent hoops for £150 if you shop around and even cheaper for 125's.
And fitting new rubber now will be the rubber you use over the winter wet period if you ride all year round.

matha, what have you got to be scared of? its your own actions that control the bike at the end of the day. its you that twists the throttle.

dont be scared of the thing. respect it but dont be scared.

just take it slow and steady and after a while you'll get your confidence

Its a confidence thing riding bikes and its the same as anything else the more you use it the better you get at it, just take your time and you get a feel for what the bike is telling Wink but it does take time.
What i was advised to do when i started proddy racing (RD350LC) in the 80's was to have a go at off-road moto-x riding because i just could not get to grips or handle the bike when it started sliding and i spent more time on my arse at races than riding the damn thing Rolling Eyes
i had a few m8's who did moto-x racing and went to them and i used to go with them when the practiced and rode there crossers !! OMFG the 1st time i got on a YZ250 it TERRIFIED me the thing was like a wild animal with 1 purpose in life and that was to spit you off and kill you ! well i bought a cheap old RM250 (£150) and i started using this as much as i could, now bear in mind i live near the beach and loads of land round where i live so no probs finding somewhere to ride it, and it didnt take long before i was getting the hang of drifting the thing on turns and getting used to it, still scared the bejeezas out of me but i was getting it, over the months i got better and better and eventually i had the beast from hell tamed and drifting was a piece of cake, BUT when i got on my race bike i found when it started to drift instead of being spat off and limping for a week i could control it Razz Some of you younger riders may not of heard of King Kenny Roberts he was the 1st 500gp rider to actually steer his bike coming out of corners using the throttle and drifting it !! amazing to watch, he won the 500 world championship 3 times in a row including his rookie season in 500gp ! when he was the marlbro yamaha team manager he insisted all his riders could drift bikes by taking them to the states and getting them to ride moto-x bikes but mainly what the yanks call flat track bikes its just a big 1/2 mile oval track which they learned how to drift bikes on tarmac ! this was then used when they raced in the 500gp's.
So if you have near you a place where you can hire a dirt bike or use a m8's go do it you will be amazed just how much more confident on the road you will become, im not saying go start drifting your road bike on the road but if it ever does you will know how to handle the situation a hell of a lot better than if you had never been on a moto-x bike.

Old tyres are just as "deadly" as worn tyres.

The rubber goes "off" and loses flexibility and can feel like you are riding on a diesel covered road when cold.

My other half bought a low mileage F650GS twin spark and after a couple of days started thinking that wheel bearings were on their way out as the bike had been standing unused for a bit, a good assumption.

We checked all the bearings and the bike still slid all over the road for increasingly longer periods when riding off on cold tyres.

With all the bumpf that came with the bike we worked out it was still on original rubber... this was in 2007 BTW so we were assuming three year old tyres.

The front had a date code in 2002... 5 year old tyre... but the rear was 2000!

Given that tyres have an effective shelf life of possibly two maybe three years before they start getting harder and take a longer time to warm up, BMW were sending bikes out with old old tyres on.

Fitted two new ones , mere months old, and the handling improved straight away.

I am like this with my chain, after I had one snap whilst riding. Any little knock in the footpegs sets off my paranoia as I know how nasty it could be should the worst happen. I was also scared to filter once I clipped a wing mirror one time. I got a puncture a while back and I can say over many months I'm not so bothered whilst riding. All you can do is check the tyres for bulges, holes, shit sticking out, correct pressure etc before you ride each day. It gets better with time. Thumbs Up
