Dangerous travel or a good way to get a cheap ride?

For instance, today I'm gonna have to walk 5 miles from a country village into town to get a bus to plymouth. Hitching a ride would be a sensible way to make it much easier.

Back in the day, my dad hitched 1000's of miles and he gave rides 1000's of miles, bring it up with anyone else of that age (mainly mates parents) and they say how dangerous it is etc etc....

Obviously things can change over the years, and there are always gonna be a few horror stories doing the rounds, but from experience it does seem the vast majority of people are friendly decent people...

Hi

Have stopped for hitch hikers a fair few times.

However these days it is very rare to see one (with the exception of car delivery drivers), and that has probably made it just as rare to find someone who would give a hitch hiker a lift.

As such suspect you could land up waiting a hell of a long time for someone to give you a lift.

I've done it a few times and not had a problem.

Being a moderately well built skin head type may help.

A friend some years ago had some dodgy looking pikey people who were giving him a lift turn off to some dirt track with no explanation/reason to be going down there - he got the hand brake on and jumped out, they didn't try and do anything more.

Well I was planning to walk anyway, as I walk along moorland roads though, should someone happen to pass going into town then I wouldn't mind a lift...

More interested on general views rather than the one journey...

My mate Hitchhiked from Oxford to Morocco for charity. He never had any problems except one border (can't remember which) wouldn't allow him through on foot, there was no cars around. He waited ages for a car to come along, eventually one pulled up and offered him a lift. Turns out the driver was like chief of police for somewhere, drove him the whole length of the country and gave him some money at the end of it for food. My mate now lives in Paris and is a knob lol.

Hitching whilst walking, in my experience, has resulted in fewer lifts.
Trying to get a lift whilst walking in the rain, is FAIL.
Sunny day at a service station. Good times....well mostly.

Oh forgot to add, yep i'll give a lift, if the circumstances are right.

ive noticed hitchhiking is alot more rife...

i dont tend to, as i only ride the bike, and never have a spare helmet with me!!

I tried to hitch while walking a few miles back from the pub once when I was smashed, no one stopped except a police car who thought he was HILARIOUS when he said 'you picked the wrong car this time mate'. In my infinite wisdom I said 'I am not sure what you mean, I am on my way to Weybridge are you heading that way?', and bam a lift home for me.

Hitching, I've tried a handful of times, unsuccessfully. And on one of the rare occasions that I was given a lift, it was my uncle, so I don't think that counts.

Never picked up any hitcher that was thumbing a lift, but not long after I bought my first car, I once offered a lift to a bedraggled youth who was walking thru torrential rain

Picking up hitch hikers invalidates your insurance on certain policies, I would imagine it only invalidates the theft portion rather than third party cover, private ones i'm not 100% on but nearly all company vehicle policies specifically prohibit it. I personally would never pick up a hitch hiker.

ive hitch hiked all over new zealand and oz,
and even a bit of the uk (because my mrs said i shouldn't and the uk isn't like nz)
ive never had an issue, but i am a pretty big guy,

you meet some interesting people,

and because of my time hitch hiking, i always pick up hitch hikers
its the whole karma thing, i figure im paying back the karma i borrowed

Hetzer and I have done a lot of Europe on our thumbs on various mad adventures. We did ok considering we were 2 6'+ oiks, dressed in combats looking like desperate tramps. We've had lifts from good looking lone girls, one who took us down an old dark track as she knew a place for us to camp. We informed her of her folly and explained how dangerous it could be for her.... Another chap picked us up, took us a fair distance, bought us a lovely lunch and gave us a few quid.(Hetzer had left all our money at a train station counter.... )
