Hi all,

I'm looking into getting a bike at the moment, and was pretty set on getting a YBR125 for a year or so to get used to everything before upgrading. However, I sat on one yesterday, and it felt like I was sat on a tricycle; fair enough, I'm 6'4", but I don't think that's the bike for me any more....

So after looking on this forum, I've got quite besotted with the Honda Varadero 125 and have a few questions.

1 - Is it a good idea to get one if I'm only going to sell it in a year anyway? What I was originally going to lay out for a bike seems to be creeping up a fair bit (I mean I'm getting more and more dirty looks off the lass).

2 - Is 22k miles too many? I'm looking at this bike and wondering:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201029363819269/sort/priceasc/usedbikes/engine-size-bikes/70cc_to_225cc/make/honda/page/1/postcode/pr29ru/keywords/varadero/radius/30?logcode=p

Bear in mind that as a n00b I don't want it to start going skitz on me till I can learn the ropes.

3 - Are Hondas really worth the money? I think I probably already know the answer to that, but I thought I'd ask to make sure.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, oh, and i saw one on an 05 plate, 1685 miles, for 2450 quid. Is that a good deal?

Thanks in advance,

Salz

I would say that having a bike for a year is probably the better way to do it to be honest. You get to gain the experience on a less powerful bike and hence less likely to kill yourself.

I didn't click the link but 22k miles is perfectly acceptable if it's been probably looked after. The engine isn't a very high-revving engine either.

3 - Are Hondas really worth the money? I think I probably already know the answer to that, but I thought I'd ask to make sure.

Yes, they are very reliable.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, oh, and i saw one on an 05 plate, 1685 miles, for 2450 quid. Is that a good deal?

I would say so yes.

Thanks in advance,

Salz

All just my opinion though. It's the kind of bike you could go 60MPH on all day every day and be comfortable. It's supposed to be a comfortable bike as well, a great bike to learn on. You are learning, right? You could definitely do it cheaper if money is a big concern though.

Hey Rapdude, bear in mind I'm a noob Smile

I'm guessing you think it is expensive for the year - but the mileage is pretty low though?

They do attract a high price, but thats far too much. When I picked up the YBR I ruled out a Varadero (couldn't justify the extra £400) for £1200 on an 51 plate with 6k. Older ones won't be an issue so long as they've been looked after.

They're nice enough, but you have to bear in mind that if you drop it (which you will, even if it's only slow) it'll be expensive to fix. You also need to budget for either a paddock stand or a centre stand for it or checking the chain etc will be a nightmare.

That being said, assuming you don't drop it and you pay a reasonable price you should make the thick end of your money back.

+1

They're more to start with, but you get more at the other end too.

And you can drop them and get a new fairing off ebay for £60 and spray the other 2 up with rattle cans Laughing Rolling Eyes Wink

I'm 6' 4" and it was the only 125 I felt I could live with.

I had one it was my first bike am 6ft 3 and tbh it was the right bike for me, kept mine for over a year and a bit if my memory is right. I used mine to commute through Glasgow and it was perfect, nice riding position, see over cars, a big bike so moving up to a CBR 600FY did not feel heavy just an increase of power. They are expensive and hold their value fairly well unless you buy from new.

I would recommend it as a first bike to learn on if your over 6ft and not a skinny fecker. Wink

A five year old bike with low mileage, I would assume that its been well cared for and only ridden in nice weather so probably well looked after.... On the flipside it could have been standing for months without being ridden....

Its entirely up to you, personally I would say its worth a butchers as everyone I know who has owned a Varadero has said that they are sound bikes (if a little pricey). If its a private sale you may be able to haggle and knock a few hundred off. Plus when you come to sell it on you get your money or deposit for a big bike sorted.

I can recommend the Varadero, they are at the pricey end of 125's but are a cracking bike, smooth, comfy, great visibility, average about 75mpg with a big tank, range is about 220miles normal commuting. Will sit at 70mph and in my opinion as its a big bike which often gets mistaken for a proper big bike it should help with the transition to larger bikes after passing your test. I have had mine for a year with no problems at all, and fully expect to get the bulk of my money back when I trade up after doing my das. At over 6' 1" this was the only bike I felt comfy on, go have a look and a sit on I'm sure you could haggle a bit off the price if you liked it.

If you fancy a 70 mile jaunt along the A6 (I assume you're in Preston Question ) then there's a nice low mileage '08 Varadero (with top box) in Penrith Motorcycles. Saw it the other day when I popped in for a battery charger.

Thanks for the info everyone, much appreciated.

Gonna go look at the 2005 one at the weekend with someone who knows about bikes, getting quite excited Smile

That one for £780 looks like a right bargain, wish that it was a bit closer to me up here in the People's Republic of Prestonia (how did you know that Capt Castle?).

Will be back with loads more questions soon Smile

This is the point I get to either:

A: Pretend to be some kind of creepy stalker
B: Claim to possess some freaky psychic powers
C: Point out that the link in the first post has your postcode in it

Pick your favourite and I'll go with that Wink

If it was me I would consider the journey back to Preston. Just imagine coming down to London, then riding your own bike all the way back on A roads on a mini adventure. I travelled about 150miles the first ever ride on my YBR after passing the CBT. It's scary but well worth the feeling that you get from completeing it.

Don't rule it out mate, you could be saving yourself so much money.
