I just consider myself lucky that someone that pessimistic isn't riding a bike too.
I just tend to ignore those types of people, and then ride off in a cloud of rubber smoke and loud revs at the first opportunity

"Those things are dangerous, they should be banned" is something i hear regularly. These are the same people who drive cars who say things like "Sorry mate! I didn't see you!" and cause bikes to be dangerous. I frequently get the urge to give them an ear full, but gave up trying to convince people to think about things ears ago. Fuck'um.

yep get this all the time at work. i sell cars for a living and park the bike outside.... every fella goes 'whos bike is that outside???' and we get talking about biking etc. and then the missus pipes up, every time 'your not having another bike i told you that when we got married, you will be dead in a week blah blah blah BLAH' to which i reply 'obviously im not dead...' and get more BLAH BLAH bollocks. the guy looks dejected and down trodden, a form of domestic abuse in my opinion... can you imagine the strop if you banned her from ironing because she might get burnt!

I thought that is (if not the reason, then a nice benefit of) why we ride?

The whole 'devil may care' persona that comes shown by a stiff lipped smile, a nod, and disappearing on your 'death machine'.

Realistically, I feel much safer on a bike going damn fast then I ever do as a passenger in a car. Most drivers have no hazard perception, no ability to pre-empt situations and generally overestimate their cars ability to stop constantly.

As I had to say to my lift the other day. I'm not scared of getting hurt, I'm just worried a crash with thoroughly ruin our day. Now if you could just stop tailgating that truck in the rain I'd be much happier.

I've had it a few times, most of my friends from my local are fine as its a biker pub.

The funniest one I had was my aunt. Who said - and I quote almost verbatim here;

'You really dont know how to ride, its not like your the police who have amazing reactions. Try driving with kids in the back jumping up and down on the way back from school and driving'

To say I nearly rolled around in hysterics was an understatement. That statement had it all.

The comeback of 1) Police aren't gifted with 'super' reactions, its actually down to observation and forward planning - i know i've done bikesafe with them and 2) Woman driving cars have been termed 'school run mums' and are amongst the most dangerous on the road as they pay too much attention to the 'kids jumping up and down' in the back, rather than to the road.

I think thats the first - and only - time i've ever won an argument with a woman.

A guy standing behind me in the queue in the local shop simply asked me the other day "Is that your bike? Aren't you scared?"

And then he sloped off ... leaving me to wonder, Scared of what?

I have a friend who is a doctor, working in A&E. When I told her I was getting a bike she half smiled, got a misty look in her eyes and said:

"You know, one of my favourite things about my job is when I get to cut off leathers... the leather they use is just so lovely to cut through."

I told her that, at that particular point in time, I was more afraid of her than I was of riding a motorbike...

In fairness to a lot of non-bikers bikes look much sportier than they are.

For instance to a non-biker a GPZ500 looks like a sports bike, where as the majority of us know it is more of a fairly nippy commuter with a fairing.

And everybody knows sports bikes are evil kitten killers and a menace to society as we know it.

Bet you non of the harley lot every get warnings of how dangerous bikes are

Apparently, I’m way too old to be out and about on a bike, I should have grown out of it by now, I have responsibilities

Well I didn’t know there was an age limit on enjoying life!
I still seem to fit on the bike, so obviously I’ve stopped growing, (probably be reaching the shrinkage stage soon).
Responsibilities, Fook that, I’m having too much of a good time enjoying myself.

The reality is that riding a bike is dangerous, probably why most of us do it.
I always get the impression that the “Doom Sayers”, as you so eloquently put it, are just a tad jealous.
They probably lead very boring lives, and fantasise about being whisked away from their humdrum world by a leather clad biker with something hot and throbbing between his or her legs, (delete as appropriate).
T’will never happen though, they just ain’t got the get up and go to do it, I bet they all mow their lawns and polish their cars on a Sunday as well.
Muppets the lot of them! I blame their parents!

Now where did I leave me pipe and slippers??????
