Wireless connection problem...

I'm on talk talk with a wireless router.
If i connect to the router wirelessly,it say's connected but it won't let me go online. Both my other laptops connect to it no problem though?

I can still connect to someone elses wireless on this laptop just not my own network? The only way this laptop will work on my router is by using the ethernet cable Crying or Very sad

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Sounds like a conflict in the WEP somewhere, what protection is the router set up for and how do you manage the connection? ie what wireless device/software are you using on the one with the problem?

Check that you are getting the correct IP settings. You can be connected to the router via wireless but if your IP is set incorrectly you'll not get outside.

Start a command prompt and type ipconfig.

You should have an IP address of (something like) 192.168.2.3 and a gateway of (something like) 192.168.2.1. The subnet mask will always be 255.255.255.0

I'm using vista if that helps? and the encryption is wpa? something like that. The wireless adapter is built in to laptop which is a HP pavillion dv 6500. Broadcom i think.

Nothing has changed though with the set up i'm using and it worked fine in my old house! since moving here it's never worked.

Typing ip config gives me (is it safe to post up online? )
IPv4 address :192.168.1.@@
default gateway :192.@@@.1.@@@
subnet mask : 255.255.255.0

No idea how i would change my ip though? i assumed it would do this automatically like it does on my other laptops?

All ip's starting with 192.* or 127.* is your local network ip. Perfectly safe to post them up online.

That was short lived Crying or Very sad
It's back to normal again today. Having to use the ethernet cable again.
The ipconfig /renew things not working anymore. Any other ideas?

Not since doing the ipconfig thing. Maybe that's the next thing to try.

reset the router and still no good.

Are the other laptops OK still?

It looks like either the router or your laptop are having problems giving / getting an IP address.

Are you able to get onto the router to look at the settings? It may simply be that the DHCP range isn't big enough - in which case you just need to extend it. And while you're on your router, have a look to see if there's a DHCP log as that might give us some clues as to where it's all going wrong.

Yep, other laptops and mobile phone still work fine with it.

I can log into the router using the ethernet cable but i can't see anything in the options about DHCP?

It's not really a big deal as i only really use this laptop for downloading stuff so usually has the ethernet plugged in anyway,but it would be nice to know what's going on with it.

I'd go into the properties of your wireless connection and reset the password. That screen shows that you're not making a wireless connection and until you do you can't run tcp/ip over it.

This is weird.
I disabled encryption then everything worked again.I have now put the encryption back on and still good,but i bet it's gone again the next time i reboot the computer Doh!
