Nopes, I suppose I would if I had a crazy mod like a turbo, but nothing else.

Yes, it doesn't really raise your premium.

There should be an option of 'I don't have any'.

As it happens I mention I have an aftermarket exhaust but say there is no power increase - generally goes down as a cosmetic mod then which my previous insurers haven't cared about.

I assumed that there was a negligible increase in power output from an end can alone.

On my old bike I told them about the exhaust and they didn't change the premium at all. Just make sure you tell them it's road legal and doesn't affect the performance.

I'm not going to phone them up when I put new grips on or whatever they'd probably get annoyed if I started doing that. Laughing

I'd put a handlebar fairing on the cb500 which got damaged when a blind bitch reversed over it. The insurance company said it wasn't covered as I didn't declare it, but would honour it under the "up to £100 of accessories" clause.

I argued it shouldn't make a difference as I wasn't making a claim on my insurance, but on hers, and that what was damaged on my bike shouldn't make a difference as to what was or wasn't covered by my policy, I was only interested in the value of the damage. They agreed in the end, even though they then tried to ignore my no claims bonus and put my premium up the next year, which I also successfully argued against.

Bottom line, I'd declare mods and alterations, just to make handling the minimum wage fuckwits who man the phones easier.

I used to modify my cars and declare everything. Yes it cost more but better safe than sorry.

Recently I tend to have non-modified vehicles or with factory fitted goodies. I.e. if you get a brand new bike with Arrow exhaust fitted as optional extras you don't declare it as modification AFAIK. But if you fit it yourself then yes.

when looking at quotes to insure my fazer in this coming september. i will be 17, with 1 ncb etc. if i tried to declare ANYTHING, even crash bungs, i retrived no quotes back as the companys all said they couldnt insure me because of the modifications. so yes it does affect your premium.

but for a 40yr old with 5 years NCB etc. it wont make a difference.

Just don't declare any then wait a few months then phone them up and add any mods you want to. You'll probably get some uninterested insurance guy who will just go, "Yeah mate, no problemo"

Especially if you do it on a Friday afternoon. Laughing

Declared more or less everything, bars, exhaust, mirrors, lights etc as it didn't affect the premium.

The car on the other hand meant that one thing declared would either mean they wouldn't quote me or it would go up by several hundred.. Ridiculous.

I've fitted SV650 calipers to my 30 year old Moto Guzzi making me less likely to crash, do you think they will reduce my premium Question

I do declare mods. Not declaring them is like betting on a game of chance where the rules change per-game and you don't have even the slightest clue what any of the odds are.

I'm 17, 1 years NCB, Hornet 600, declared Modified Dual exhausts, road legal, custom paint job. No increase in price.

Yes, I always declare any mods or extras but then a sidecar is hard to miss.

Agree.

I don't think it costs me more with my current one (i'm with Carole Nash and they couldn't give a hoot most of the time) and what's more i quite enjoy rattling off a long list of all the bits in bobs to each insurer as i shop around. If they want to spend time/staff wages/phone bills on the 0800 number noting them down for the whole of stuff all real-world difference (i'm TPO and its all practical mods like chain oilers etc), then i'm happy to oblige them. And then say no to their stupid quote Laughing

I managed to confuse the insurance call centre worker with that:

Her: "Is it fitted with a sidecar?"

Me: "Sometimes"

Her "what do you mean sometimes???"

Me: "I mean sometimes it's got a sidecar, sometimes it hasn't, it depends what mood I'm in"

Her: "...."

Me: "sidecars are generally removable"

Her: "Ohhhhh"
