...But I'm making another tyre thread, I know theres been a few already but this one is mine Laughing

At the moment I have an Avon Storm st on the back and some other Avon sports tyre on the front, got no complaints with the tyres other than the back has squared off quite a lot.

Anyway, after about 4000 miles I have eaten through the rear tyre, I expected that I moved to a more powerful bike I would use the tyres quicker but 4k miles is what I hear people get out of gixxer 1000s and the like, I would have expected at least 6k from mine Sad

So my plan was to try out a pair of Maxxis tyres next, my front is only a month or so old but I was going to buy a pair anyway and get them fitted and keep the front Avon in the garden until I next need a new front, but obviously with wearing through the rear so quickly I am a bit more cautious with what I want to put on it, also although I have only heard good things about Maxxis I am still pretty weary about them so I don't know whether to go for sports or sports touring.

My dad put a set of BT023's on his R1100S a few months back which he really recommends but if I go for the BT023 I will only be able to afford the rear and ideally I wanted to put a matching pair on it however I would expect the BT023 to last a fair while longer than the Maxxis.

So what would you guys do:

Arrow Pair of maxxis sports touring
Arrow Pair of Maxxis sports
Arrow Rear only BT023

Or is there some other tyre or pair that you would recommend? I'm working on a budget of £150 maximum including fitting.

If you do go for the maxxis make sure they are brand new and not been sat on a shelf, especially a shelf at DK Motorcycles! Theres three cases on my RSV forum of the tyres delaminating after very little mileage!

I dont know about gixxer thous but I would normally expect 2k miles out of a rear on my cbr6! For 4k your looking at riding like a granny or using some pot road 2's or similar with dual compound!

I have Pirelli Diablo Stradas on my TDM, and rate them highly should be able to get a pair for about £150.

I'd be more than happy if I managed to get any where near 4k. 2-2.5k is about average for most of the sports orientated tyres I've tried, I'd hope to get an extra 1-2k out of touring tyres.

So if this guy can get 6000 from a tyre does that mean he is riding like a fanny or that I need to get what he has got?

Sorry for the stupid questions by the way, sportiest bike I have had before this was a GPZ500s so tyre choice was always BT45.

That said, I did see a GPZ1100 with BT45's on it once, don't think I'll be risking that though Laughing

I personally think your wasting money buying the latest and greatest tyres for a ZZR. The bike was designed with whatever the tyre technology was in place at the time. Even the cheaper tyres available today from a recognised manufacturer are going to be better than the OEM tyres. The bike wasn't designed to use soft compounds.

Doesn't mean they won't help out though. I went from 020s to roadsmarts on my ZZR, they were an absolute revelation on it, really did feel good Thumbs Up

I dont know if the supercorsa is a touring or a sports tyre so i cant comment! I used BT014's on the cbr. Pilot road twos can last 4-5k on a Hayabusa and the gripped well under power so msybe the 240 notes is worth it?

As for the link, the RSV is a 120bhp bike with decent torque so your zzr should last equally as well on the same tyres. I just think if you buy a sportsbike with shitty mpg like the RSV you shouldnt be caring about the rubber and fitting touring tyres!

I also would recommend pirelli diablo stradas, i had them on a zxr 400 for a year or so. Harder centre compound i believe, but i may be corrected. Good for touring/commuting, and pretty good round corners too. Much better in the rain the qualifiers i have on the 7r.

I vote for michellin pilot 2's.

No reason why you can't rag it with them either.

I don't disagree, but how long did they last? Its always a compromise between wear and traction. There is also the weather to take into consideration, racetechs on my CBR were absolutely superb, until the temperatures dropped and I may as well as ridden on the rims for the amount of grip I had.

I'll agree with this.

Got a set put on my ZZR a few weeks ago and done just over 1000 miles on them and no obvious wear, grip like a monster too.
The ones i had on it before were rubbish but now i'm hanging off the bike like an ape at silly speeds and it loves it.

Failing that the new storm2 is a definite improvement on the original storms

I agree with Marki. Another consideration is how old the existing tyres are. If they have been on there for a few years and are worn out then any new tyres will feel amazing in comparison. You tend to not notice a gradual decline in performance with any components, which is why you can think your shock is ok then it fails an MOT.

Im on pilot power 2cts on my cbr6, great grip in wet i've had about 5k out of them so far with a trackday in between and they're still got plenty of life in them. Stiffler put a pair of Pilot Road 2ct's on his 636 c1h and got 11K out of them. He doesnt hang around either.

I might give these a go next. My mate has them on a R1 and he seems happy enough. I did notice that they have a very shallow profile, they don't seem to roll around the edge of the tyre as on my Qualifers, then again I think that fitting a 190 section has deformed the tyre.

Having a look around seems to give mixed reviews. Wear seems to be anything from 2k up to 10k? Michellin really don't seem to have a good name on the 'net.

Yeah the missus uncle says he doesnt like the michelins, as he finds they are abit squirmy on his ZX10r and swears by pirellis which aren't as good in the wet but superior in the dry. Thing is he only does dry weather riding though so is perfect set up to him.

I do believe certain tyres are best suited to certain types of bikes/weight/performance/setup etc. Example is i'm yet to find something for my CBR that feels as good as Bridgestone BT90's on my old NC30 although the michelins are close.

these power pures are beautiful, got rid of the chicken strips within 30miles and not had a single issue, riding back from getting them changed in the pouring rain, even with the waxxy crap on them i could feel every detail of the road and felt so confident.
