Well...Got ready for seeing Peter Green
We were all Gee'd-up..ready to see the man that we both admire.
It was an open air gig, and i was going with my Dad ( who is an accomplished musician.) Got there in the pissing rain only to be told, gig cancelled. On the way up from London he was taken ill and went to Hospital.

Ended up sitting on a bench in a graveyard..in the rain. Was good to have a proper Dad/Son chat. Smile

Now Dad's into Jazz n Blues n RocknRoll and Spanish..Well owt apart from most of the stuff i play, but we are bonded by the love of The Blues. He and a friend have managed to get Jerry Bergonzi to come over to England with his band (£850..cheap as chips) and play in town. Now i hate not being able to get into types of music...i feel like i'm missing out on something..But i can't get my head around jazz.

Obviously i'll be trying some Bergonzi, but are there any Jaaazzz Catz out there gimme some pointers?
I have a Best of Miles Davis and a Dizzie Gillespie and some Cannolball Adderley Lps and they don't do it for me.
Maybe some Piano driven Jazz?...Dunno.

Hit me with links.

I'm not that great a jazz fan, but from being subjected to it in my childhood, there's a couple of Kenny Ball tracks I do love, Midnight in Moscow and The Green Leaves of Summer.

Although seeing this whilst looking through YouChoob makes me want to spooge :-

'Kenny Ball can Feck off Razz '

...see what i mean? Embarassed

Ok, Jazz is huge innt. Now i like chillout stuff...not too minimal and not keen on the rainforest/waterfall/beach shit. More weird chillout.
Or sexy chillout, sometimes abit of mental chillout.
I also like Killing Joke Twisted Evil ...Damm i'm going nowhere.

Don't want squarking Trumpets/Sax/Clarinet whatever.
Don't want covers of popular songs all jazzed-up.
Or that crap Cleo Laine does.
No Ragtime style stuff.
Solos under 15mins would be Niccceee.

Peter Green = awesome.

Jazz is wrong.... don't try to get into it, I've tried - For me it was like pretending to enjoy red wine (it makes me want to puke) because it looks more sophisticated than a pint of lager!

Don't get me wrong, I respect what other people enjoy.... each to their own, but if you've got this far without Jazz in your life.... you probably don't need it Laughing

I detest it and my other half loves it - we argue!

Ah come on you cant say that,
Some people dont know if they like stuff until they tried it, if i had never been exposed to some sort of jazz that i actually liked when i was a kid i would never have got into it, and now i make my living as a jazz musician. Let people try it and make their own minds up. sometimes it just takes hearing the right track or something, so respect to the OP for not being as close minded as some people and being willing to give it a try Thumbs Up theres loads of different jazz out there, and loads to try, you may hate lots, but you may find something you like

By the way im a huge Bergonzi fan, how the hell did you manage to get him over for £850?! Thats amazing!

So who rattles your can? I am big on Miles, Gill, Mingus, Train and Ornett but dig people like Gillad and Talvin Singh.

Talvin Singh some Sawhney..State of Bengal, Autechre, Luke Vibert n DJ Shadow.....into Miles, Gill, Mingus, Train and Ornett.

I have some more exploring to do.

(Think i might do my own Jazz track, and depending on how it turns out, that might help point me towords a flavour.)

@Amreet: Didn't hear all the details, but he's a players player and was happy to be invited by devotees. I'll get info about exact date etc.

Not sure what happened to Dad. Laughing Seemed like one moment he was playing screaming lead with mental arpeggios, and now it's Sax and Harmonica Shocked Now he could always blow a good harp, but these things he's got are amazing...

For me it's all about the Coltrane, especially:

John Coltrane - Central Park West

If you like fancy a bit of a reggae tint, check out Ernest Ranglin:

Surfin' and Below the bassline

Also, there's the New York Ska Jazz Ensemble's cracking cut of the jazz standard Harlem Nocturne.

Just be careful that The Spirit of Jazz doesn't get inside you.

Thumbs Up

Never really understood Jazz it just seems a bit boring sometimes. It's not my cup of tea but I don't dislike it. I prefer Blues, was just listening to some Billy Branch on the tube of you.
