Just a bit of random thinking at the moment, wanted to know if anyone has ever put a vehicle of theirs into storage?

I know this is common in the states with their plentiful 60's classics that they love, but don't want to drive.

I've done a quick search and it seems average prices for secure/dehumidified storage seems to be £20-25 per week. That is a lot of cash in my opinion to stump up each month, particularly if you aren't particularly precious about the vehicle. Mine aren't classics. I wouldn't be prepared to pay much more than that per month never mind per week. I would prefer indoor and secure and unlikely to get damaged (i.e. not some farmers barn, or some residential numpty with a spare bay in his middle class double garage), but that would be all the requirements.

We have possibly too many vehicles, given that we only have 1 official parking spot. I don't particularly want to sell any of them for different reasons.

I assume most cars fit into ISO containers, and you can buy one of those for a couple of hundred, it's just having somewhere to put it.

Anyone got any leads or experiences?

Any possibility of lending to someone on a long term basis? It would still get used, serviced (hopefully) etc etc while you are unable to use it.

When i worked for a local authority, we needed to store unused machinery

Metal containers keep to much damp = we found that out when we stored a mixture of mowers and ground work machinery, ie it was all rusty after a year Sad .
The machinery that was stored in a large concrete shed faired a lot better.

We found if we put the machinery on axle stands and let some of the pressure out of the tyres, that was good and saved tyres from going west.
we also gave everything a wipe over with an oily rag.

A couple of years later, all we needed to do was service the machines and they were good to go.

Dont try to run it/start it up as soon as you get it out of mothballs, as all the oil will have run down to the bottom of the engine.
We turned engines over by hand and used cans of squirty oil in all holes/inlets/outlets before we started them up.
Smoky Smile oh yes!

I know i am talking about industrial engines and machinery, but the principle is the same.

Stick a card up in the local shop window?

Some retired folks or someone who can't drive may let you use their garage for a bit of bingo money.

Hi

I think the local going rate for just a small rented garage is about £5 a week. In some ways quite surprised it is only £20~£25 for dehumidified decent storage.

All the best

Keith

An ex colleague of mine used to have a Noble that he stored in Surgard storage. Dunno how much it cost but it was just a normal storage unit, just large enough to fit a car in IIRC.

You've just said you don't want it stored in someone's large hanger type barn, but if you change your mind, then I might be able to help you. Cool
