Dr Martens falling to bits after 2 months.

My first pair from the doctor, and I was led to believe it was a brand synonymous with quality.

Well they have not been subjected to a hard life, less than 2 months truck driving and dog walking and the sole has split along the side already.

Anyone found similar? Or can recommend a decent alternative work boot?

I've used UK high leg assault boots the past few years, they last well given hard work and a lack of polish (12 months approx), but I need a steel toecap for a lot of places elf and safety rules nowadays. Also getting the assault boots on and off can be a bit of a rigmarole if you like them laced up.

Cheers for any recommendations.

i had a pair do this after 6 months, took them to the cobblers who fixed them ( try timpsons ) for a fiver !! good as new, lasted another 2 years then..

great boots but sometimes the glue doesnt stick jut right first time..

Health and safety usually moan about steel toe cap at our place. Apparently does more harm than good if something really heavy is dropped on them

Dr Martens moved their production to China in 2008, the pre 2007 made in UK ones were much better than they are now.

Maybe you should try Army boots?

I took mine through the depths of Siberia through mud, rain, snow, blistering heat, Seoul Nightclubs, Chinese cities and streets, and have worn them for riding since my return..

They are very slightly cracked where they bend at the toes but otherwise fine.

There saftey boot is very light and comfortable and is fitted with a composite carbon fiber ceramic toe cap which is stronger than steel, there feel just like a normal assault boot you would never know the cap is there unlike steel ones.

£60 from ebay or police supply shops.

i had a pair of DMs fall apart after a month, took them back to the shop and had them replaced only for the same thing to happen with the new pair. in the end i swapped them for the cheaper "dr pepper" boots and they lasted me years.

I haven't had to replace my old Docs, they are still going strong. Had them re-soled once (a long time ago now). Granted they don't get as much use as they used to, since my bike accident...but after what Itchy said, I suppose they are pre-2007 so that will be why they are still as good as new.

I only paid £20 as work subsudise me, but they are pretty tough. Mine are starting to honk a bit now, but they are still going strong. Leather's a bit scuffed/cut, but that's about it. I spend my whole day on my feet and the sole etc. is still in really good condition.

Supercomfy and the laces haven't even broken yet.

I've worn out several pairs of SWAT and Magnum boots - including their steel-capped versions (for riot duties etc). Out of the two, I preferred SWAT, Magnum are very much the budget make, and I've had two pairs of boots collapse on me while still fairly new.

Lowa boots are the best I've ever worn - I usually replace boots every year (as I wear them at work, on the bike and off-duty) but these (Mountain GTX) have lasted nearly 2 years, with plenty of tread left and barely a mark on them despite numerous scuffles and daily use.

They've never leaked a drop, I've never had cold feet (even when helping dig MoP's cars out of the Big Snows we've had the last 2 years) and they do a good job of opening doors when we don't have the Big Red Key handy.

I don't think they do steel toe cap models, but if you can do without that feature you won't find a better boot.

current doc martens ( made in China no doubt ), have lasted me a year, 6 months of that being used as work boots whilst working in mcd's ( covered in fat on a daily basis, dirt grime, ), I've never slipped, never had any issues, and they clean to look new every night when i get it,

no doubt if the sole starts t come away, down to cobblers and they'll be good as new again, but theyre sooo comfy its untrue !

they just look awesome too,

try getting them fixed and you wont regret it

As I mentioned I did have the army boots, but the steel toe is the deal breaker there.

Also on all the army combat boots I've had, they dig in badly on the achilles if you do them up tight enough to give good support, the material also wears away at this point, and can make them extremely painful to wear once that inner layer is gone.

They can also be a right ball ache to get on and off, particularly if you have slightly damp socks. Given that I need to take them off in a seated position with legs underneath a steering wheel they aren't ideal.

I also hate the way no one sells the original laces that are thin enough to not jam up in the speed lace system. Even though most people advertise them as the official laces. The problem with the standard thin laces is of course that sooner or later they snap.

Unless you polish them religiously to keep them supple, they split where the toe bends, as you have found out. All my pairs have done this eventually apart from the highly maintained pair that I gave away

Thanks for all the suggestions, I have a long list of bookmarked online shops now.

Will see what this place does about either a refund/exchange, then probably look at another brand.

I actually have always fancied a pair of these, but they would not be good for work and don't look too grippy, but for proper old school leather boots they are awesome.
