Hey,

New biker here - doing my CBT on 7th August, and really looking forward to it. Plan on spending the weekend getting my hands dirty on the bike and giving it a proper service. I'm pretty sure I'll be bugging you all soon enough with noob questions Wink

Have you had practice with gears/clutch off the road or are you going to just do it at the CBT?

No practice off-road as yet, so it's all going to be on the day of the CBT. Had 17 years experience in a car, so knowing the roads isn't so bad.

Carried out my first bike service today though, and loved it. The poor little CG was screaming out for some attention on the chain - damn thing was practically dragging around the bottom of the covers it was that loose, not to mention bone dry. All sorted now though Thumbs Up

Only a week to go JH, good luck with the CBT, and welcome to the forum.

Keep an eye on that chain, if after a day or two it reverts to giving that 'slack' feeling, then you may want to invest in a chain and sprocket kit. Only 20 something squids of fleabay.

You'll enjoy the CBT, it's a ton of fun - made easier by the fact you can drive a car Smile

ok take them 17 years and forget about them for riding the bike bud. cus its a whole world different. in a car you've noticed there are some wankers around, normally a minority, on a bike you'll find theres some wankers around and its normally a majority!

as for gears. forget them too. most bikes have a wet clutch and designed to be slipped. you can ride around half clutch and the thing wont break the way a car does. dump the clutch and the bike will bite your ass!

for your cbt you'll be doing lots of first gear slow riding in their carpark. a little second gear but until your on the road thats all you will use.

best practice i found was get used to changing gear untill you dont have to think about it, and you can do it anywhere.

imagine if you will, sitting on a bus or passenger in a car, practice the changing gear procedure on a bike as you sit there. throttle off with one hand, squeeze the imaginary clutch, move the foot to change gear and release the clutch as you twist the throttle

yes you may look a twat but if you can get used to them movements you'll find it clicks on a bike.

they had a cone in the middle of the enterance to the training yard when i went on my DAS and i hit it. the instructor shouted over "you'll never pass your DAS" as he laughed and i just shouted back, "do you have any idea how much skill it took to hit that cone"

I disagree a little on this... have you ever tried teaching someone clutch control on a bike, that has never driven a car or has any idea what your saying when you say slip the clutch a bit, having driven a car will help with clutch control....also a few days ago a guy 2 or 3 doors away from me, broke their ankle for riding his 125 automatic scooter (without CBT) too close to the kerb, and the center stand caught it and threw him off. The reason he said he was riding too close was because he was positioning himself where he normally does when riding his bike. Knowing the highway code from 17 years experience will help tremendously for doing a CBT.

Next is to build confidence on my own bike - since it's an older model, it's got drum brakes front and rear, so it handles a bit differently to the little AJS YBR125 clone that I was on for the CBT.

Been out at the local 'learner driver/rider' area round by me - a largish carpark with plenty of junctions and space to run around in. Still not feeling quite road-ready, but getting there. Another few laps and short runs, and I'm sure I'll be fine. Rather be careful in a carpark than make a mistake in front of a bus Wink
