Now then,

I'm currently doing DAS with a local training school, had 4 hours worth of lessons last week and something is bugging me. 1) My instructor has barked at me over the radio a couple of times for not doing my lifesaver (i'm doing it, but apparently he thinks i'm not turning my head enough!), and 2), and i'll be the first to admit it, i've checked over the wrong side when preparing to turn, but realised my error and checked the other side as well before turning. Does anyone think either of these will result in me failing? And yes, i'm well aware that not doing a lifesaver before completing a manoeuver is a fail, just wondered if i'll get marked down for doing two checks and being over cautious?

not at all..

you have to make it obvious you're doing it.. and actually looking.

like your driving test. you make it really obvious you're checking your mirrors even tho in everyday driving its just a flick of the eyes.

just take his advice on board and just do as he asks.. he is your instructor after all.

as long as he's just correcting you and not screaming at you down the radio then he's just trying to help you. let him Smile

You have to do the 'over the top' looks, not saying don't do them after the test.. just saying make it 100% obvious Smile

as most people have said, make it obvioius that your doing the checks.

i was told by the instructor on my DAS that a lifesaver check is a look to make sure theres nothing coming beside you. not behind, the mirrors are for that. and always look in the direction the bike is going to be going. unless its a roundabout then u do a right check as you leave the round about incase some bastard is trying to sneak in front of you.

there is no harm in checking both sides. i look to my left as i pass a junction on a roundabout and to the right as i leave the roundabout at the junction i need.

but remember, when doing a lifesaver your eyes arent in front of you so you can fail for over doing it.

same with mirrors. when your riding along you can glance in your mirror without moving your head. on the test you will have to emphasize your look so the examinor can see that your checking.

My instructor told me the examiner has to see the tip of your nose, so as the others have said above, it's making it an obvious look.

As for the left & right checks I've been told you wouldn't fail for doing both, but you would fail for not doing the correct one, ie I tend to automatically check over my left shoulder on a roundabout, and then remember I should actually be checking over my right...instructor said this quick check both ways would be fine.

You can be marked down for being over cautious coming up to junctions if you come to a stop when it's not necessary too often.

i had to do mod 2 three times, the first time was being over eager, second wasnt looking properly and the third i passed with a couple of minors for undue hesitation

i got minors for waiting when i should have gone and passed where the first time i got a fail for going when i should have waited.

doenst take a genious to work out that its better to get a minor for waiting than a fail for not waiting.

its finding the ballence. as my instructor said. if in doubt, chicken out!

Yeah, you have to exaggerate everything for the examiner's benefit. It was like that even in the lenient 80s. I remember my instructor telling me that you had to ride in a way you never would in the real world in order to get the bit of paper, then you could ride 'properly' once your test was passed Laughing

By contrast, if you do advanced courses, you get a fail for moving your head to check mirrors.
