Track day cars

Rather than hoon the Audi estate around a track, I seem to have bought this bad boy:

Should be picking it up this weekend and start stripping it out as soon as poss

There were a few from here who went on a car trackday, IIRC Bendy & Binge...

I would liked to have attended, but was having overheating problems at the time. I've cured that now, so am still keen.

Perhaps we could have an official BCF car trackday, hmmmmm.....

Never been to a track day as such as of yet, but frequently go to a place called Crail raceway ( https://www.crailraceway.co.uk ) and do some 1/4 mile runs and drifting on the oval; which is ideal for your Beemer.

Will hopefully make it to Knockhill before the end of the year.

328 is a good basis for a track hack, but you need to go the whole hog with tough coilovers, fancy anti roll bars etc.

My 325i is 'partially' track prepared with Koni street shocks and lowering springs, rear strut brace and tarty brake discs and pads. It still rolls like a bastard when ever shown any kind of corner.

Do the M50 intake mod and gain an almost free 20bhp on the 328.

Strange, I never really thought BMWs suffer body roll of any significance, at least i've never experienced it in the E36 or E39. If I was going to do a few car trackdays and I had the space i'd do exactly what you've done, buy an E36 328, cheap power and no turbo. Unfortunately I don't have the space, or I could make the space but don't want a stripped out Beemer sat there 363 days a year.

Thats what always puts me off about track cars, it will be sat on the drive 360+ days a year taking up too much space.

If you're taking out the aircon (guessing not though), I'd be interested in a pipe from it. Need a driver's door with working window too, but suspect that's even less likely!

been trying to get two mate who think they are the next f1 prodigy to go on some, but they want to take there road cars (daily drives)

Should be ok for one, but expect them to get through a lot of brake pad, clutch, tyre and bushing wear.

Stock bikes handle trackdays a hell of a lot better than even pretty expensive stock cars - ie seen plenty of newish 911s with smoke pouring from their brakes.

In the end, while a bike is taking relatively light forces in the normal direction of travel (due to leaning), the car is having to stop 1.5-2t of stuff trying to slide at 90 degrees to the action of the wheels, as well as stop all that weight etc on stuff designed for daily use getting to the shops.

My line manager at work built a Caterham-type kit car some years ago. I'd never been on a track in it, but it was plenty fast enough even on the road for me...

Also driven a 5 litre Ford Mustang on a private road, and managed to spin the tyres in 1st, 2nd, 3rd AND 4th - that was an experience

Cheap handling mod, Bin the lower arms with their gay plastic mounted ball joints and replace with Lemforder E30 items, while your at it call into your local BMW dealership and get a pair of E30 M3 offset wishbone bushes (about £23 the pair)

No more wobbly plastic mounted ball joints and the altered castor angle means a sharper turn in and better steering feel

Picked it up yesterday morning from Kettering, this morning I bought a new battery for it, put in some fresh petrol and it fired up on the first turn after standing for 2 years

Took it out for a little test drive on a private road and succeeded in leaving some rather tasty black stripes on the tarmac

I took my 318IS M-Sport on a novice track day at Cadwell a week last wednesday. It's now in the morgue.

Made a mistake going into the first part of the Gooseneck (distracted following another car and went offline) and when I tried to change directtion for the second part the car swopped ends then gripped and spat me into the armco. Shame as upto then it was the most fun I've had in a long time. Mate who was with me runs a dedicated E30 325 track car with coilovers, cage, race tyres etc.....it is very very quick - he embarasses lots of M3's etc!!!! I'd do it again but would have to be in a dedicated track car or something I didn't care about, like the 316 E30 I swopped the remains of my IS for.
