All,
I'm considering changing the rear sprocket on the SV, undecided whether to go +3 for better acceleration or -3 to help when riding at quicker speeds.
I'm swaying towards -3 at the moment, going on the theory that over 100 / 110+ the bike starts running out of revs, but i'm unsure if with different gearing it'd have enough power for it to actually make any difference or make the bike more comfortable at speed?!?
i've had a look at the different graphs showing what the bike should be able to do with different gearing, but wondered if anyone's actually tried it on a bike with similar power to the SV and can offer an opinion / share their experience ? ____________________ Previous: Cub50, NRG50, TS50, YB100, CB125, NSR125, ZZR600, CBF1000, SV650s, ZX6R B1H, XT250, Mito Powered Crosser, WRF450, , FZ600, VN800, GSXR600 - Currently CB1000R |

Naked or faired? The naked has a 45T as standard, the faired one has 44T. Both use a 15T front.
You can get about the same effect as +3 on the back by dropping to 14T on the front. This will increase wear on your chain, so look after it better.
I would say -3 is a waste of time. That would put the theoretical top speed up to about 140mph, and I don't think a standard SV puts out enough power to get you that fast.
I went for a 45T on my faired SV. Marginal difference, but I liked it. Biggest effect was being slightly higher in the rev range at 'normal' road speeds, so the power was more accessible given my riding style. Someone who rode in a lower gear than me probably wouldn't have noticed much difference.
Go play with this

I can't get my road SVS to 'top out*' in top with the stock 15/44, you have no chance if you gear it higher!!
Mine gets to ~120 and you can then use an egg timer to see any speed increase ... if you gear it up more, then you are going to need a VERY long road to get any more speed ... and where/why would you want to keep an SV at >120 for extended periods of time?!!?
Oh and I use 14/44 on my TRACK SV ... and that WILL top-out!!
