Unusual to just be on one side. Which model of bike is it?

Assuming something fairly old and/or simple, I'd be looking at the contacts in the switch. If you decide to full dismantle it, do so in a clean, well lit area, preferably on a dust sheet. They have a tendancy to ping a very small ball bearing into a very dark and dirty corner of the garage.

Its a Honda CBR 400 1991 on an H , there is no corrosion in any contacts , i must admit I haven't looked at the switch itself though !

Is this a problem that has just started to occur on a bike that you have owned for some time or have you just acquired the bike with this problem?

I'm with Robby. You mentioned it didn't do it when you first had the bike and the only difference left to right is the switch. I'd still try a different earth wire out of interest.

Is there an alarm fitted?
