It's Ben Collins, or someone the manufacturer sends if the car is exceptionally rare/valuable.

Somebody once told me that it's Ben Collins.

Apparently this came to light at Elvington when Richard Hammond had that crash of his.

Ben Collins' name was on the accident report or something.

This, coupled with the odd photograph where light reflections have allowed cameras to see through his visor etc, lead me to believe it's correct.

There is no single stig, top gear employs a load of professional drivers and uses whoever is available and experienced in the car or vehicle being used. So if it's truck racing they will use a truck racer, rallying a rally driver etc. As said above schumacher owns an FXX, all the rest are sold to selected people only, so in order for top gear to test one they would need to borrow one.

The purpose of the stig is to be an unknown person, otherwise if driver A sets a time of 1:20.0 in a new supercar, then driver B beats that by 0.1s in a different car, people would be questioning which driver was best rather than which car.

read somewhere ben collins lost the job because he blew his cover
he took proof's to a printers to have a calander done and someone in the print shop spotted him
and went to a local paper, I've also read quite a few places name perry McCarthy and also Sabrina has did a few episodes in Europe

they have used others in the US episodes and "Truck Driving Stig" was a pro truck racer
but can't for the life of me remember his name now

It's an open secret in the media, the Stig is actually a test driver from whichever manufacturer makes the car being tested. It makes sense really, topgear is so popular and influential that companies want to use their own drivers to showcase their vehicles, rather than let a randomer perform poorly and make the cars look bad.

I'm sure on occasions they may allow certain well known professional drivers pose as the stig but generally it is manufacturer appointed test drivers.

He did it as revenge for Barrichello beating the Stig's time the other week.

I reckon its Ben Collins where they feel that Ben Collins will be faster (IE reasonably priced car, hatches, coupes, some supercars, super saloons etc) and its a test driver where the test driver will be faster (F1 car, Ferrari FXX, Veyron etc). The FXX test driver *was* schumacher. Ferrari wouldn't trust it to anyone else.

Ben collins is a test driver for Ascari, thats pretty much top end merchendise

on the multiple driver theory I watch top gear at least 20 hrs a week
stuck in a flat most nights dave is a decent option, I like bikes but apart from bikes on Eurosport
its top gear on dave for an evening in front of the TV yes I seen them all 10 times
and yes sometimes you can see that its not "normal" stig, bit taller
or fatter, but on about 80% of the show's I'd say its the same guy
even driving style
and lines on the track, stig even uses a different line to the F1 drivers
that have been round esp in turn one
