In need of a new lid, currently have a Shoei XR1000, even tho I wear plugs my ears are goosed after every ride.

Reading reviews the Schuberth C3 flipup seems to be the quietest helmet about at 60mph

What happens above that speed say 100+ is it still the quietest helmet or would a ful face helmet be better say the Schubrth S1?

Thank

Not had that Schuberth C3 flipup, but the Caberg flip front I had was terribly noisy. I would never have another flip after that one.

Better earplugs? I never got on with the foamy ones. I have re-usable washable ones (look on the small travel items rack in Sainsburys) and they're much better.

Do you have the whisper kit fitted to your XR1000? If not then it may be worth getting one and trying it out before splashing out mega bucks on another lid. It simply clips into the bottom of your helmet and makes quite a difference to the noise levels inside the helmet.

Cheers for the replies,
I bought a pack of different ear plugs to try, but using them me ears are still ringing after a ride

Yeah I have the whisper kit fitted to the helmet, it did make a slight difference but once again me ears are still ringing.

A think the only option left to try is a new lid, ive not had the shoei long at all and cant really afford a new one but dont wana damage me lugs

I'm surprised you're having problems with ear plugs in, I would have thought with them properly inserted it wouldn't matter how loud your helmet was. Make sure you've got them fitted properly I guess...they need to go in the holes in the side of your head, not the ones on the front Laughing

By the way that whisper kit cost more than my helmet itself Shocked

What ear plugs are you using? I have an XR1000 and find it perfectly quiet with ear plugs.

Agreed.
I am almost a deaf man with ear plugs.

Don't think someone its putting his plugs in properly.

Squeeze and roll one end as much as possible, place into ear until edge of plug you're holding is just tucked nearly behind your middle flap bit. Let go and listen, you should notice it getting quieter and the plug wool expand to hold itself in place, with mine in when looking straight on in a mirror you cannot see them, side on you can see a hint of them but its below the surface of the ear.

First time I wore plugs for shooting I was trying to jam them in without compressing the one end all the way. Almost deafened myself and learnt my lesson.

Ideally you want them far enough in that they meet in the middle. If your finger isn't buried up to the kuckle then you haven't gone far enough Thumbs Up

XR are very noisy lids but with plugs it's fine for me. As the others said, are you putting them in properly? Maybe try a different plug with a higher rating.

I think all of the Schuberth lids seem to have a good rep for low noise.

There's one particular one, can't remember which, that's meant to be realllly quiet.

Mr XR1000 was nice and quiet, now got a Arai Viper GT, soooo loud its unreal. But getting it customer fitted has improved the noise massively.
Try finding a lid that fits you better and it may help! Other than that try getting some higher rated plugs.

I have to admit, I find the XR1000 to be noisy as well... but was kind of convinced that's because the one I have is a bit big for me. I've recently bought a Schuberth S1 Pro and it's much, much quieter - but I still need plugs for anything much over 50. Now, all I need to find is a set of plugs that suits both ears, as the ones I have work really well in the right, but not the left... Rolling Eyes

I have the C3 flip up. It's incredibly quiet at all speeds.

My bike is terrible for noise - on the owners forum nearly every post is someone complaining about the poor screen and loud noise, but with the C3 it's absolutely fine. The Schuberth S1 Pro I had before it was slightly louder being an older design, but a mishap on a ferry meant that had to be replaced. The AGV S4 I had before it was like putting your head in a wheelie bin in a gale force wind!

It's a quality helmet - really quiet, doesn't steam up, useful sun visor and all the convenience of a flip up. Will certainly buy another when the time comes, unless it's been superceded.

I do still wear ear plugs mind, as even the quietest of helmets can still allow damaging levels of noise through.

I've had both the Schuberth S1 and S1 Pro (my current lid) which replaced it.

I rated the S1, it was quiet and fitted well with little wear over the two years which I wore it, at 100+ it was as quiet as a Nolan at 70-80mph.

Tempted by a sale price at HG in December I bought a S1 Pro, now I know they'd changed the design slightly, but personally I think it's bloody awful and a step backwards.

Admittedly the S1 could be a bit on the warm side in summer, so they changed the chin skirt, giving the S1 Pro a removable section to let more air in. They've added extra vents, made it lighter, and used different padding. All of this means it's lighter and offers more ventilation but is therefore much noisier.

To be honest I took it back, and asked if they'd moved manufacturing to Romania or some such place because even holding it in your hand it lacked the quality feel of the original S1 and felt more like the R1 which looks and feels shocking.

However, as there's actually nothing wrong with it, I'm stuck with it until I change to my next lid.

I was going to go for a Shoei XR-1100 myself next, but if you reckon it's noisy I might wait and see what Scuhberth come up with in the next 18 months.

Simple question no malice intented, do you have the ear plugs in correctly?

Are they inserted well into the ear canal (not so far you retch) and after they're seated can you hear your fingers being rubbed together (think "smallest violin in the world type rubbing") approx 4-6" in front of your ears? If so they're not in right and it's not necessarily your helmet.
