hi. i have a gas gas ec200 and was wondering how to adjust the power valve?

it has a aftermarket exhaust, boyesen reeds and has supposedly had the carb properly set up.

im just thinking if i can play about with the power valve to get the power to be better as it seems abit soft compared to my mats ktm exc 200 that has just got an aftermarket exhaust on it.

thanks

What aftermarket exhaust? Gnarly exhausts are well known/intended to calm the delivery down a lot apparantly.

My stock KTM200 is if anything a bit too hard hitting at points (mostly the points when I'm feeling tired Smile ) and I was looking to smooth off the 'hit' so it comes in a bit more smoothly.

I don't know how to adjust it - on the KTMs it's usually a case of different springs. But it may well be more than that needed.
For instance to soften it up on the KTM, a better exhaust, bigger fly wheel weight (possibly heavier clutch plates) and a couple of other bits I forget are done.
The powervalve should be more a case of changing when you get the 'hit' starting, though obviously it's a bit more complex than that.

i dont know what exhaust it has on it. its the standard back bit and after market front but its been painted so i cant see what make it is. on the ktm its a fmf exhaust.

the ktm just feels more powerful when the power valve kicks in if you know what i mean? i thought you mite have been able to adjust mine so its got more of a kick to it? im new to off road so have no clue

Note that the powervalve does NOT produce that 'kick', in fact a powervalve is designed to offer better low-down power, so you get less of a kick. However it tends to be set up to change around the point the power starts to build rapidly, as at this point it's not needed.

My stock KTM does have quite a kick as the powerband kicks in. It's good fun, but as I say, a lot of people will try and tame it a bit.
If your peak power is as good as the KTM you've ridden, then the probability is that the mods have been done to smooth the power delivery.
The Gas Gas of course may be different from the KTM, but the KTM is peaky because they've basically taken the 125 and added a big-bore kit, there's no other real difference.

If you ride a 250cc or 300cc 2 stroke enduro bike, you'll find they have a really smooth power delivery, with no noticeable peaks - this means it's easier and more predictable to ride.

oh right. i thought the power valve kicking in was the power band.

the ktm doesnt seem any faster its just on the open stuff when you give it some it seems more fun due to the more notaceable kick of power.

i have ridden a 250 and neat year when my riding is better im gunna get one. hence why i dont want to spend lots of money on performance for the 200 as its a cheap bike for me to learn on.
