I wonder if riding in a group/pack statistically produces more accidents than from bikers who ride alone?
I very rarely ride in a group, I enjoy riding as a pair but in a group I find bravado and stupidism takes over the majority.
Tbh I prefer to ride solo, I can concentrate solely on my riding which is far safer when riding fast.
I rarely see solo riders or pairs pulling off stupid manouvers, they all seem to come from the groups- like the braindead cocksucker on the red r6 who decided to play chicken with me tonight on the b1257. Leading a pack of 3 he decided to swing out and overtake a 4x4 towing a caravan, tailed by a car, tailed by a car with a caravan. Its a blind left hander to him and a blind right to me. Oh how overjoyed I was to see his lights glaring straight at me at around 80mph in the middle of my lane. I had to hug into the kerbside as he squeezed through the gap between me and the 4x4. What a retarded turdburglar. Half tempted to chase him down but probably more likely to end in tears.
So with him riding at the front of a group I wonder if he felt pressured into this manouver or wether he just fancied risking it for a biscuit?? It was as soon as the solid line turns to a broken line on his side so he obvioulsy felt he couldn't wait to check for a clear road first, but his only option was to gun it past regardless of what he was gonna meet round the bend. Fukwit.
*Rant over*

All depends on who you ride with. Personally i tend to avoid riding with strangers. the people i ride know i trust with my life they all know the score ride staggered and check there mirrors both sides before moving anywhere.

Touch wood the only accident recently was a ninja owner with his wife as pillion doing a stupid overtake past our group and hitting one of our group who had stopped for a zebra crossing. Silly cunt panicked and had the bike on the deck well before he hit my mates fazer sending his pillion on a superman flight into a face plant knocking her out for the count he also smashed his arm to bits.

After giving some basic first aid to the broken arm guy i took some pics

I dislike riding in packs intensely. I do get the urge to try harder than I should, and so do others. I don't do it anymore, after I nearly killed myself keeping up with a faster guy.

Just rode in a pack today, i think 2 is the best, with someone you have an understanding with not to pull off stupid overtakes on you, generally riding for each other as well as yourself.

But yes i prefer solo riding on the whole.

See it all the time round here, it being a popular N.Yorks destination.

You can't say all group riding is hazardous, some riders might gain more road sense from riding with a group.
But definitely there's a tendency for some to be pressured to exceed their ability (or their bike's ability)

Crazy overtaking to keep up or follow the leader manoeuvres are a particular problem.

Was out in group with some local lads and lasses today. Although i have been ride outs with them before i do think it encourages fast riding, well in me anyway. For all I set off sayin its just bout riding your own ride, i just dont seem to ba able resist trying to keep up a bit. For me though the worst thing is knowing you have someone faster behind you. Even if they are happy to hang back a bit i just cant seem to put them out of mind. Constantly end up watching my mirrors and wondering what they are thinking about my riding which obviously leads to making small mistakes with lines an whatnot. Even if i am out with mates of simiar capabilites to my own i prefer to follow than be followed.

I definately feel i ride my best when i am out on my own though -luckily that is about 95% of my saddle time!

All depends on the mind sets of individuals in the group.

I have been on rides with quite a few different groups. The times I have felt like there is going to be an accident, have been poorly organised rides. The rides I have felt safe in have been well organised. I also think a lot of it is down to the group leader. If they set the right pace for the group then no-one feels like they need to keep up.

Pack riding can piss me off. If i'm at the back i either way to go faster, or i have trouble keeping up and feel pushed to ride harder than i might like. I'f i'm at the front i either have to keep checking my mirrors to stop myself zooming off, or i'm slower than them and their all over the back of me threatening to crash into me or overtake without warning.

I went out riding with one guy, he was slow as fuck on the open roads. When we came to a busy town center he started riding like a chav and was speeding at the back of me and slamming on the brakes, overtaking then getting lost and dropping behind me again and doing the same thing over and over.

Oddly the only person i've ever enjoyed riding with is my dad Shocked He corners like he's on stabilisers, gives it some stick on the straight bits but always keeps a safe and reasonable distance, and usually catches up if i lose him at a roundabout or something.

I think everyone rides harder than they would alone, and probably because of the alpha male thing.

I'm usually the fasted one out of my 'group' of mates who regulary go riding together, but I stay within my limits as I know I'll be picking up the pieces should I mess up.

provided your all sensible about things pack riding can be a great feeling.

but then i once rode in a pack of 1500 other bikers and its probably the best biking feeling i have had!

but riding in a group can be safe provided no numpty tries to show off and everyone is aware of the other riders around them. ie. can see them either in front, or in their mirrors. and enough of a gap is left between riders to react to any situation.

if i'm out with people i leave enough of a gap to hit my brakes if the bike in front has to slam his on.

I tend to ride solo or in twos or threes with people I know. I'm the quickest so I stay at the rear for most of the time.
when i have been in larger groups there always seems to be someone who has an off, even though many are advanced rider/riding instructors. The pack tends to try to ride 15-20 mph faster than when it is only a few. Solo riding I tend to choose the pace that suits the road and can be much quicker, but also safer.

I've done that too. My mate has an Evo FQ300, hes not a particularly good driver so pulling away from him down twisty B roads is a lot of fun. His love dual carriageways on the other hand... Rolling Eyes

Hi

Also not keen on riding in packs. Can be OK depending on the riders, but sometimes only takes one to screw things up.

All the best

In some ways riding in packs is safer because there are more of you and you're far easier to see, making SMIDSY crashes much less likely. But there is the tendency to go faster and sometimes run out of talent while trying to do something stupid while keeping up.

I've only ridden in packs a couple of times. Once was a leisurely ride to the seaside in which the experienced and quicker riders stayed with the slower or more novice riders. Everyone stayed together, rode staggered for visibility, and pulled over if someone got left behind. For me as a newer rider it was really good.

The other one I was with a load of quicker riders. Instead of trying to keep up I let them whizz off and did my own thing until I caught them all up at the next roundabout.

Negative. The myopic cager expects bikes to be on their own, so they see a bike, expect a gap and BAM.

According to Bike magazine, there are no statistics on the number of crashes per mile travelled in a group versus singly.

I really wouldn't be surprised if crashes happen more often in a group than riding alone. Not one bit.

I used to do a lot of 'pack-riding'....well if you can count three as a 'pack'.

Used to frustrate the heck out of me. I nearly ALWAYS wanted to go faster, and felt the others were holding me back.

It was torture.

I'd be sitting watching the road, at a junction wondering why the fuck they didn't pull out, or why going into a series of bends they'd be breaking so hard; why on the straights they'd not get up any 'propper' speed, or blast past doddering old duffers in cars.

Whole time I'd be thinking "I'm burning petrol, and wearing out tyres for THIS?!"

Then we'd stop, and they'd get off, and say "So how did I do? Can I ride home now, or have I got to catch the bus?" Laughing

I had to tell one bloke I wouldn't ride out with him again, he was an absolute menace. One time he even chased a car driver down after he "thought" the guy passed too close on a dual carriageway. He was grateful when we arrived and stopped the bloke from giving him a well deserved kicking.

Another time a mate ran into the back of another bike as he slowed for a cattle grid near Ribblehead, the knob was on one of MY fucking bikes at the time.

It's hard work sometimes, either having to hang around and wait, or trying too hard to keep up. Most times now, I just go with a couple of trusted mates, or on my own.

I would quite happily ride with a group, so long as I could burn off or hang back and not get harrassed for it.

I rode with the SOC when they went down to Cheddar Gorge, and I swore blind I wouldn't ever again!!! I got stuck behind someone who braked in the wrong places and put me off my line, and when I tried to overtake them, I got shouted at, and told 'you're not allowed to overtake'... wtf!?!?! Nazi's everywhere... Thumbs Down
