no idea about classics, but im with MCE and they seem to give TPO cover on other bikes as standard. You hear stories that the afterservice etc is bad, but the price is low...

This is what I don't understand if I'm honest.
I'm 18 and ran a few quotes of thebikeinsurer and gocompare etc.
Quite a few came back with a box ticked stating 'cover for other people's bikes' or words to that effect!

I used to keep a policy open on a 'ghost' moped. Bike didn't actually exist, it had been dumped i a skip 3 years before I was even old enough to ride, it, but I had the number-plate.....
Was twenty-too-many years ago, but cost me something rediculouse like £25 a year fully comp.
Held it open for about five years from when I was 17, as it was cranking up NCB discounts I could use on a car, offered legal services, and covered me to ride / drive any other vehicle with owners concent.
Found it a very useful little instrument; got the loan of a brand new SAAB 9000 for the week-end once from it, another occassion, a Masaratti Bi-Turbo! (Both freinds of my Uncle / Father, who had drunk too much & needed some-one drive them home & save thier licence!)
It was while I was at Uni, and with an unreliable car, and a bike that kept getting nicked, was most useful for being sure I was covered when I borowed a car off-some-one.
BUT, do be careful when using the 'Any Vehicle with Owners Concent' clause, and check the small print carefully.
I had it on a policy from, I think it was direct line, once upon a time. Used it to drive an american mini-van I was thinking of buying.... called them for a quote on the thing, and they told me they wouldn't covr it, as it was left hand drive.... I told them they already were...... I was driving it under the policy extenion on my Granada.... they got very 'squiffy' about it!
Also, the vehicle HAS to be insured in its own right, to use policy extension, AND it HAS to be sregistered in some-one elses name.
My old moped policy was quite useful in that respect, as the wording didn't ACTUALLY nail that one down, and I DID use the policy to tax a car I owned and was registered in my name, so I could flog it, once.... these days tends to be nailed down a bit better in the small print!
BUT you get the idea.
Cheap moped policy; limit the premium by picking something incredibly mundane and insurance freindly to begin with, like a C50 or Thomas pedel & pop. Limit it further by accepting the lowest mileage restriction you can, and highest theft excess you can.... after all, it dont exist, so you aren't going to do ANY miles, and as it dont exist, it aint going to be easy to steal, is it!
But, you should get the any-other vehicle extension you want, so do make sure the voluntary excess on damage is sensible, AND you can clock up a few extra years notifiable NCB on it, while you keep it running.
(21 years old, I bought an MG Metro. Hardly startling, but few of my mates could afford the insirance on one, certainly not in thier own name. Insurer didn't believe me whan I claimed six years and 'full' No-claims discount, having only held a driving licence for four years! I had 3years on a car, and three years on the moped, thay ALL counted!)
Worth checking out, I'd suggest.... theres a few pluses from the scheme, and it is NOT illegal, to insure a 'ghost', provided you aren't committing fraud some-how, like registering your every-day commuter in some-one elses name and riding it on the extension, or try claiming for theft of a vehicle that doesn't exist. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Wall of text, but it IS illegal to insure a ghost bike for the purposes of riding another bike on a 'ride any bike' policy. It is pretty serious actually. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F

Read the 'wall of text' I provide the 'qualifications' that explain where an dwhen it MIGHT be illegal.
It IS illegal to obtain insurances by making a false declaration; so insuring a cheap 'ghost' with the sole intension of using a policy extension to ride another bike as your 'main' transport IS illegal.
However, if you use the policy extension AS INTENDED by the stated or implied T&C's, for 'occassional' use of some-one elses machine, and NOT as you main means of transport, or for prolonged periods, then THAT is perfectly legal.
It is EXACTLY what the cover on the policy you have bought is provided for, and you have paid for.
JUST becouse you dont use the ghost bike, for which main cover is intended is immeterial, PROVIDED you dont breach the T & C's of the policy, or attempt insurance fraud with it.
Its no different to buying a McDonalds happy meal for the toy..... you dont HAVE to eat the burger.
As adendum; you DID need to check the T&C's carefully. When I came to renew the insurance on the 750 a while back, I noted the clause in the T&C's on 'other-bike' cover limited it to machines of a capacity no higher than that insured... so a ghost moped's extension would only let you ride other mopeds. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
