On a six night trip, would you schedule in a rest day or not? We're planning on taking it reasonably easy, 200-250 miles a day around Scotland, but we are on a bike that is hideously uncomfortable for long distances.

(A GSX750 w, if you were wondering)

+1

And usually a good idea to stay out of a bar as well.... based on my one "rest day" on my last jaunt... Laughing

Riding a bike in Scotland IS a rest day. I have ridden and toured Scotland for 4-7 day stints. Every day was on a bike and every day we did between 200-300 miles a day. but we relaxed, stopped when we wanted, had some sort of plan of what we wanted to see that day. In the evening we went to the pub for a meal but only had one or two pints. Up at 7am and after a good breakfast, out on the road by 9am.

I think it depends on the weather, where you are and what your interests are.

If it's pouring with rain and you're somewhere interesting with indoor stuff to do, then take a day off the bike. If you're somewhere interesting where you want to have a mooch about then take the time too. If you're dead set on being on the bike then get cracking each day!

I personally would probably go with the same plan as Skudd - take a good day pottering about on the bike, settle up for a good meal and a beer and do the same the next day.

Just back from a European offroad trip where we rode 130 miles (offroad) every day without a break for over two weeks and it was fine. We only had a couple of heavy riding days, the rest were pretty easy going and very enjoyable.

Like KittyKat says it's your holiday - do whatever you wish and if you decide not to go with your original plan, so what - just enjoy yourself! Thumbs Up

If you want one take one, if you are just there for the riding like I was and like constant road attack then don't.

We ended up taking a rest day in Inverness. Well, I say rest day - what with pottling around Loch Ness, going to Culloden and various other excursions, we ended up racking up 130 miles anyway.

Full tour report with piccies will be posted tomorrow - with Added Dramatic Incident on the Motorway
